"Fair isn't everybody getting the same thing, it's everybody getting what they need to be successful" (Anonymous". This is a mantra we believe in our pre-k inclusion classroom. Our young learners do not all fit into the "cookie cutter" mold. We all learn in different ways, and many times, students need specific accommodations to help them focus and learn best- and NOT just students with special needs. Every year, we have students that have trouble with managing their place on the rug while a whole group lesson is taking place. Some students need more room to wiggle and fidget, as they may have more sensory needs compared to the typical 4 or 5 year old. Having a chair, pillow, or fidget to use to get fill these sensory needs helps our young learners to focus, and therefore be more open to learning. It also helps them to have a visual cue of the place they should sit and remain for the duration of the lesson. In addition, students at this age (3-5) often have to learn how to build their social skills and manage their emotions. Often, the two can effect one another when a student has difficulty in one or both areas. A secure and quiet calming zone (square) will accommodate our students in appropriately calming themselves down before reentering the conflicting situation and working it out accordingly with a teacher.
