See It! Feel It! Learn It!
Funded Nov 29, 2017Thank you for your donation to my project See it, Feel it, Learn it. The funding of this project provided sensory materials that will facilitate learning and social skills.
This project provided a sensory table with a cover. Some students seek out high, intense sensory experiences while other resist new sensory experiences. This table allows quick change out of supplies and allows a diverse variety of supplies. The ease of the cover comes in handy if the sensory experience is too much for a particular student and also to show when the table is not available. The squishy letters and numbers make learning to write a new sensory experience that is engaging, academic, and social. Our students are taking turns and sharing. This has definitely been a wonderful addition to our learning environment. Again, I can not say Thank You enough!!”

For Real Fidgets and Fine Motor & Sensory Supplies!
Funded Aug 16, 2017I want to take a moment to thank you for your support, but also to take a moment to share how these "simple" supplies have impacted my students. I created a donor's choose project seeking fidgets and sensory materials to increase my students success with fine motor activities. These "simple" supplies have done more than I could have ever imagined. These tools are so engaging and useful in many more ways than I hoped for. I created a light box with fading colors that students use to relax along with a sound machine. This same light box also engages students in learning by placing items on top. We placed leaves to count for example. The fidgets have also been used for hand strengthening. After my students have engaged with the fidgets and sensory tools, there are more "ready to learn" and can attend to fine motor activities for a longer period of time. They can use the self-opening scissors and gluesticks that were also a part of this project. I am excited to continue to use these supplies for the rest of the school year.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Herb Kohl Philanthropies and 4 other donors."Sense"sationalizing and Strengthening Our Bodies and Minds at School!
Funded Dec 5, 2016Words can not express the excitement in my students' faces and actions when I brought in the new supplies I received from Donor's Choose! I quickly realized that I would have to let the students independently explore the items before I engaged them in a therapeutic tasks with the items. It then hit me, even though play, the students were developing their fine motor skills and performing hand and finger strengthening.
I work with students that have limited verbal skills. While interacting with the new supplies which included play doh and kinetic sand, my students were more willing to independently use the voice output communication devices to request supplies, different colors, and even express, I am having fun! Using the play doh and having several different color options also provided communication opportunities for my students who have verbal abilities. I work with students with Autism that at times, lack appropriate, independent, social skills. This encouraged my students to interact with their peers and make eye contact.
I am truly overwhelmed with the positive impact these new supplies has had on my students. I appreciate everyone who donated as well as the Donor's Choose staff for facilitating this amazing opportunity.”
