Academic planners allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Currently my students are given a school-issued planner; however, they do not possess the tools that allow them to use this tool effectively. Making sure students are successful in planning academic tasks is an essential component in feeling accepted in their classroom environments. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given the tools to plan, organize, and implement solid learning and student habits.
My students are noticeably more successful in their work and feel accepted by their peers when they are given the skills to complete their work. The SOAR Study Skills Bundle that I have selected will help my students by giving them specific, evidenced-based executive functioning strategies. As the author states: This year, in the SOAR® Learning Laboratories, we challenged ourselves to discover “What do students in special education need the most?” We interviewed special education educators from across the country, expecting to make a “top ten” list we could narrow down to the “top three things” students need. However, we were stunned when one response came up over and over again… It was overwhelmingly, “Executive function is the greatest need!” The SOAR program will provide me with the lessons to teach skills that will aid the student in learning
Organization, Time-management, Reading textbooks and nonfiction, Goal-setting, Writing, Note-taking, Setting goals, and Listening and speaking.
I have seen how learning executive function skills can positively affect any students’ work and self-esteem; my hope is that the additional tools will help my students with special needs grow even more and SOAR!
