  • STEM Wish: Entry Into the Microscopic World

    Funded Nov 29, 2023

The stereomicroscope is such a hit in the science lab! Students as young as 4 are observing feathers, butterfly wings, shells and more under the stereomicroscope seeing objects magnified at powers they've never before seen. What excitement when they can see the hairs on an butterfly wing!

Each week I've featured a new specimen and made a sign that says what's currently on view under the stereomicroscope. The beauty of the stereomicroscope is that you can use three dimensional specimens--not only slides, so eventually I hope to teach older students how to adjust and focus with the device.

I've dreamed for years of having a feature like this in the science lab, and your generosity made it happen. Thank you so much for believing in my project and making it a reality.

    Cheers!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cahn

  • Sense of Calm for Kids

    Funded Apr 30, 2023

My students were in awe when they saw that I actually had enough kinetic sand for everyone to have their own tray! I've always wanted to have this resource to help relax them while also providing a stimulating sensory experience.

Next steps may include getting molds and other devices the students can use to manipulate the sand into different shapes.

It's a wonderful thing to have a class activity that brings so much calm and creativity to the classroom.

I am so grateful for your support and thank you for making one of my dreams come true!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cahn

  • Science is Magic in Real Life!

    Funded Oct 24, 2022

With your help we turned an empty classroom in a science lab! The students love coming to the lab and it wouldn't have been possible without your generosity.

Your donation allowed us to not only get furniture, we also had some funds leftover for a laminator and a durable set of clipboards.

It has been a dream of mine for a very long time to bring a science lab back to PS 132 and together, we did it!

I also have other exciting news to share. Thanks to another grant, by Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, we will be launching a hydroponic farm in the lab next month. I am thrilled to grow food with our young scientists and soon to be young farmers.

You helped make history at PS 132!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cahn

  • The MACROAwesome Microcosmos

    Funded Mar 12, 2014

"That's so cool!" "Awesome!" "Wooh" This is what I was hearing all over the science lab as our young scientists--most for the very first time--were seeing a specimen under the lens of a stereomicroscope.

My favorite part was talking them through that initial experience of seeing their own eyelashes in the lens and encouraging them to relax their view. Right after they do that they have that "A-ha!" moment which is such a treat to witness.

How fascinating to see with their own eyes just how intricate the skin of a snake can be, how much texture there is to a butterfly wing...our hand lenses don't magnify nearly as much!

You have given our lab an enduring gift that allows us to see the small world in big ways like never before...so much so that now we want more! ; )”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cahn

  • WOW the Kids with Science!

    Funded Jan 9, 2014

Thank you so much for contributing to the "WOW the Kids with Science" project.

With your generous support we were able to purchase authentic, long-lasting plant and animal specimens and much-needed resources for the lab, like magnetic shelving.

Seeing a preserved specimen is the next best thing to seeing the living thing in real-life. The students have been amazed to see the insects and arachnids--some for the first time...city dwellers don't usually get to see Rose Chafer beetles or scorpions up close! We've been using the specimens specifically in our animal and plants units of study.

I deeply appreciate your support and so do the children I teach.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cahn

  • Green Energy for Green Scientists

    Funded Mar 18, 2008

Wow! I can't tell you how incredibly thankful I am to have this project funded! I am deeply passionate about educating my students about alternative energy sources and these resources you provided help make it happen. My hope is that I inspire my students to think creatively and responsibly about energy in our world today and tomorrow. Thank you, again”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cahn
