Students don't absorb language from verb-charts or long vocabulary lists (In fact, it's that method that kills the fun of the language). I want to teach differently. "We Aquire language when we understand what we hear and read" (Dr. Stephen Krashen). With these books, students will be able to chose to read about stories or topics that interest them. Also, the books are designed for students to be successful. The readers I chose are created for students learning Spanish so they include many English cognates and a glossary, but mostly importantly, they are meant to be FUN and interesting to read. Studies show that reading is one of the best thing you can do to improve your language skills. By seeing and understanding what they read, students will improve not only their comprehension, but their vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. Reading also helps with motivation to learn the language. My students are so proud when they finish a book. For example, I caught a girl on her phone texting this week, but when she showed me her message it read, "I just a whole chapter in Spanish and I understood everything!". Wait, she texted someone about reading? What a proud moment :) I want to create a culture of book-lovers. My main goal is to build a strong library with lots of options and levels. I also want to create spaces in the classroom for students to be comfortable while we read.
