This year I have begun to make a big push towards free reading time in all levels of my Spanish classes. Having a classroom library with an abundance of different kinds of books helps make reading more approachable for my students. I work hard to help my students foster an appreciation and understanding of the Spanish language and culture, even if it is a difficult concept for them. Allowing them to have student choice during this time instead of forcing them to all read the same book helps spark their interest in the language. It also exposes them to a variety of new vocabulary and reinforces grammar concepts that we may not have time to continue to review during class time. Having a myriad of books for my students to choose from is the key to success for our free reading time. I have chosen short stories and chapter books intended for Spanish learners, children's books, books that were originally written in English that are now available in Spanish, and I've even added in some of my personal favorites. Our free reading time has really been influential in my students' desire to learn, and has given us opportunities to share about what we've read and learned with one another. I am extremely excited about the possibility of having our classroom library grow exponentially!
