  • Literacy Instruction Without Books? Help Me Change That!

    Funded Sep 15, 2010

Thank you for contributing to my classroom library!

My school does not have the funds to buy classrooms Spanish books. We are expected to teach students to read in Spanish but have no books to do so. Additionally, we are to provide students independent reading time everyday but without books for students to choose from, it is nearly impossible to follow through with this.

The books have played a major role in my classroom. The day I received the box and students saw new books on the shelves, they begged me to give them extra reading time so they can explore the books and choose new books for their "book bags". Seeing their eyes open wide, excited to explore new books was a beautiful experience for a teacher.

The books have made independent reading time possible. Students have books to choose from and are excited to read.

Thank you for making reading possible in my classroom. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Valverde

  • Creating a Cozy Class Library- A Home Away from Home.

    Funded Jun 26, 2010

Thank you for contributing to creating a safe and cozy environment for students to be able to read or just relax in. The pillows and beanbags have made my classroom a more inviting place for students. As a result, students are more excited about independent reading time because they get to hold onto a pillow or sink into a beanbag while reading. Additionally, it has made students more comfortable in spending time in the classroom. They want to stay during recess or come early in the morning and finish work or even do extra work so long as they are comforted by the beanbag or a pillow!

The beanbags and pillows have proved to be invaluable to my students. Considering that many of my students have neither a cozy environment at home or a quiet, comfortable place to escape to, having one in the classroom helps foster a nurturing classroom culture that makes students feel welcomed and comfortable.

Thank you for everything you have done to provide a safe place for my students. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Valverde

  • Learning Through Art!

    Funded Jul 29, 2010

Thank you very much for the art supplies. My students have benefited tremendously from these supplies.

Unfortunately, my school has a permanent sub for art specials. Therefore, the students are receiving no art education. Thanks to these supplies, I have been able to incorporate art activities into my lessons as well as provide an art center as a prize for students who complete their homework and behave in class. The art center has also worked for soothing students with poor coping skills who are having a rough day.

For science, my students completed a project about the life cycle of a butterfly. They were able to demonstrate their knowledge of the different steps in the life cycle by painting a picture. It was educational, hands on, and best of all the students were able to use their creativity! They were actively learning while having fun.

These supplies have been enriching and educational. Thank you very much for your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Valverde

  • Making Math Fun with Hands on Activities!

    Funded Apr 16, 2010

Thank you donors for your contribution to my classroom. These math activities have done wonders for my students. Even in the short time I have had them, I have seen the profound impact it has had on my students. Up until this donation I lacked any kind of math manipulative. As a result, many of my students did not understand the concept of fractions. However, as soon as I began creating lessons that used these hands on and visual parts, my students began to understand fractions and other math concepts! Equivalent fractions were no longer alien to my students. They used the fraction circles to clearly see that 1/2 was equal to 2/4. My students also had a successful math lab about probability. For the first time, I saw students taking math to the next level without becoming frustrated. Instead, they were using the timers and coins to learn about probability and having fun too! None of this would be possible without the visual and hands on activities.

I can not thank you enough for the profound impact these materials has had on my students. It is very rewarding when you not only see the students understanding the concepts you teach them but enjoying themselves in the process too.

Thank you again for directly effecting a child's learning for the better. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Valverde

  • Materials for Bilingual Classroom

    Funded Apr 15, 2010

I am very grateful for the contributions you have made to my classroom. These donations have proven extremely beneficial to my classroom. The timers, especially, have made my classroom run more efficiently. The large overhead timer has made students conscious of the allotted time for activities. Students are aware they must put their energy into their work so they can complete assignments on time. I am no longer the one pushing students to focus. Students are now pushing themselves to focus and work harder. In addition, my students and I are using our time more wisely during centers. There is no time wasted during transitions because the students know they have one minute to get to their new center.

These timers will be extremely useful not only for my current class but my future classes as well. Now that I have them, I will set the tone from the first day of school with these timers. Students will understand immediately that there is no time to be wasted.

Thank you for your donations. Without these donations my students would suffer from the inequity present in DC Public Schools.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Valverde
