  • I Want to Read and Learn About My Classmates' Culture!

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

This year I have one of the most diverse groups of students in a very long time. I have students from places like the Pacific Islands, Central America, and Asia, in addition to Mexico and of course, the United States. I LOVE this diversity. These books on different places have sparked such a beautiful interest in my students to learn about their culture and the culture of others in their classroom.

One of my students from El Salvador shared that he recognized a place in one of the books. He was so happy to see a place from home in a book.

    You are making a difference!

Thank you for who you are!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

  • May I Read Another Book By That Same Author?

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

I could have never imagined how much my students would enjoy reading books by Eric Carle, Gary Soto, and "There Was An Old Lady..." books.

I love listening to them laugh and giggle when they read words like "vato" and "simon," which mean "dude" and "yup."

Some of the Eric Carle books have sparked a new interest in animals in some students. I heard one students say to another, "Did you know that bears hibernate in the winter?" I also have taken advantage of teaching the difference between home language and academic language and using books by Gary Soto as mentor text.

I am so grateful to you for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

  • What Do David and Charlotte Have In Common?

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

David and Charlotte couldn't be more different from each other. David is a boy who does what he should not do, often gets in trouble, but is so loved by his grown ups. Charlotte is a super wise spider that gives wise advise to her friends at the farm.

I love to hear the students share about their connections to David and how they want to be wise like Charlotte.

These books are available to my students for check-out and to read at the library. However, they are so popular, and may have to wait a few days for them to returned. Nevertheless, my students are truly enjoying these books and look forward to reading them and rereading them.

Thank you for being so generous,”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

  • We Love Piggie! We Love Gerald! We Love Pigeon!

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

to say my students are elated to have these Piggie, Gerald, and Pigeon books by Mo Willems is an understatement. These books are so popular that I had to ask the students to not check out more than two books at a time.

I am so thankful to you for investing in the education of my students. When so much is against them, there is you! My students are so special to me and it brings me true joy to see them enjoying the reading of fun books such as these, as they develop their reading skills all at the same time.

May all your d reams come true and may you continue to be blessed in abundance!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

  • I Can Read Books in My Level!

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

I am happy to share with you that these books are a total hit with the students. The students whose reading levels are A through D have been checking out at least three of these books a week and they get to read these books at home. They get to read these books without major struggles because they are at their independent reading level. They also get to practice the different skills of focus they practice during their time with me in readers workshop.

I am excited to see the improvement the students will likely show in their reading in addition to developing their love for reading.

    Thank you so, so much!”

    Mrs. Rico

  • We Want to Love and Appreciate Our Differences!

    Funded Jun 8, 2024

You are one of a kind! Why? You put your money where your mouth is! I am forever grateful! Keep up the good work: it does not go unnoticed!

My students had so much fun creating the "All About Me" posters. They also enjoyed learning about each other.

The books on diversity where so useful to introduce tolerance, appreciation, differences, and similarities among each other. The students continue to read these books on a regular basis.

I think my favorite part of these posters and books is listening to the students visit the bulletin board where the posters are and smile as they learn about each other. I also really enjoy listening to them share connections to the different texts.

With my heart in my hands, THANK YOU,”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

  • All We Need Are Color Pencils and Journals!

    Funded May 25, 2024

THANK YOU forever for coming alongside me and investing in the precious lives of my students. You are the best!

The Math Practice Journals and Writing Prompts Journals are in full use and very appreciated by every student and me. The math journals are helping my students develop their math concepts and skills all according to standards. What else? These journals allow me to see what strengths and needs my students may have in mathematics. The writing journals are great! They have prompts, word banks, and sentence stems to support the development of their writing skills.

    Keep caring for others!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

  • Reading Helps Me Use My Imagination and Learn From Others!

    Funded May 17, 2024

Thank you for your generous donation(s) to this project. Words cannot express my sincere gratitude to you all.

I would like you to know that these biographies have been a total hit! The students can't get enough of these books. I think the boys' favorite is the biography on Pele and the girls LOVE the biography on Shakira. These books are not only helping my students develop their reading skills and a love for reading, but they are learning about different people and their similarities and differences. They are also learning to appreciate these similarities and differences.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

  • We Love to Read Popular Fiction Books!

    Funded Apr 23, 2024

There are no words to describe my deepest and most sincere gratitude to you for your very generous acts of kindness and fully funding this project on www.donorschoose.org. THANK YOU! I am so thankful for people like you who not only care and love others, but act upon that.

May I share with you that my students are so elated with these books. The truth is that the books are hard to be found on the shelves or bins in the classroom because someone is always reading one of these books.

As their teacher, I love listening to them laugh as they read and talk to one another about what they are reading.

    Again, THANK YOU!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

  • We Love to Read ALL of the Dav Pilkey Books!

    Funded Apr 1, 2024

I wish you could've seen my students faces when they found out the project on donorschoose.org was fully funded. One student asked, "Why did people do this if they don't even know us?" It was a teachable moment and I took the opportunity to teach them about kindness and empathy and generosity and love.

The Dav Pilkey books are nothing short of a "hit." The students are reading them during readers workshop time, independent reading time, and at any opportunity they may have.

I don't have the words to express my sincere gratitude to you all for being so kind!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rico

I am a teacher to an energetic group of second graders at an inner city public school in Los Angeles, CA. The school is a Title I school, which means the majority of the students receive a free or reduced priced lunch. I truly love what I do and I'm always looking for ways to improve my teaching and my students' learning experience.
