Students in fifth grade often need opportunities to review the four operations taught in previous years in order to master the 5th grade math content. Fifth grade content includes geometry, algebra, place value, fractions, decimals, percents and more. These topics can be dry to teach and practice. Mastery of this content is essential for my students to be successful in middle school and beyond. These games and materials will help the students be engaged and build their mastery through games. Children learn from each other as they play with friends which has double impact in that as their abilities grow, their confidence grows . As they help each other through games they are engage in real world math experiences. These games and peer interactions allow students at all math levels in my class to engage and support one another in their learning while having fun while becoming math whizzes! Mr. Rogers said, " Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." Fifth grade is often a turning point, kids either love math or they hate it. Ten year old's should still be playing to learn.
