Diverse and Engaging Stories
Funded Jan 29, 2022I greatly appreciate your donation to help fund my project. Your donation will bring wonderful stories for my students to dive into and learn about different cultures while improving their Spanish. It will also help me create inviting and warm classroom. I have been working on building my classroom library and this is incredibly helpful.”

Funded Dec 13, 2017Dear donors we are eternally grateful for your donation. Thanks to your donation, I was able to start a reading competition in the target language with my classes once a week. I read a blog about a teacher who read once a week with her Spanish classes across all levels, she made it fun, they competed against each other and against her other classes to see who was reading the most and I was intrigued. I wondered how my Spanish I classes would be able to read and she explained that they begin with level I and II books and that they might not understand every word, but they could use context clues and pictures to get the gist of the story. It turned out very successful and they have definitely gotten more out of it than just the gist.
When I asked my students how many books they had read in Spanish maybe two hands went up and I was shocked. Even in my Spanish IV classes, many of them had never read in Spanish aside from what they see in textbooks. Reading is so important when learning a new language because when students are trying to memorize vocabulary and verb conjugations it can be very confusing but when they see what they are learning in stories it starts to piece together. At first, the students were very weary and found it difficult but as the weeks went on it has become one of their favorite activities in class. We are currently reading once a week for 10 minutes. Once we are done reading the students share with their table a summary of what they read and make predictions of what they think will happen next.
Without your contribution, it would have taken a long time to gather the books and activities I received from your donation and my current classes would have probably missed out from the opportunity to read. Many students have come up to me after class to ask me if they could borrow their book and read it outside of class, it makes me so happy to see them invested in their books and learning along the way. Thank you for your generosity!”
