He Named Me Malala
Funded Aug 26, 2015Thank you for funding our trip to see He Named Me Malala. The trip went really well and the entire 9th grade at Brooklyn Preparatory was inspired. The students were very moved by the film - especially the young girls.
After the trip, during the discussion of the film and Malala's experience, quite a few girls said they now value their own education even more. Not only were they inspired, but they are motivated to stand up for what they believe in. The girls were in awe of Malala's courageousness and perseverance - something we try to instill in all of our students here at Brooklyn Prep. One student said Malala "taught me to be me, speak my beliefs, and to get my education, also to never give up on myself." Another student was brought to tears during the film because of the emotion in which Malala spoke.
Since watching the film, students have been more involved in community service. They have visited senior centers and helped out at soup kitchens, to name a few activities. They continue to be inspired by Malala and give 100% to their own education, now knowing education isn't afforded to everyone.
Thank you again for the wonderful experience.”

Making Math Fun and Engaging
Funded Nov 8, 2013On behalf of myself, Brooklyn Preparatory High School, and the students of my classroom, I want to thank you for contributing to our project. My students love the resources! It is helping to build their number sense when they are playing with the math dice, and helping their problem solving skills while they build the soma cube and pentominoes. Most importantly, it is building their perseverance. Some of the resources are more complicated than they seem, but my students are rising to the challenge not giving up. This allows me to encourage them through our Algebra class. We regularly use the resources for test reviews and problem solving strategies. Your donation has highly contributed to the atmosphere of the classroom, definitely making it exciting and engaging. There are occasions when students stay focused to finish their work early in order to play with the math dice and other resources. Again, we want to thank you for helping to make our math classroom fun and engaging!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Hendrix
