  • The Little Cricut That Could

    Funded Oct 17, 2019

I can't begin to thank you enough for your generous donation to my classroom. The Cricut has been beneficial in showcasing our student's work through bulletin boards as well as door decorations. We also utilized the Cricut and vinyl to create shirts for our Holiday Show. Students also received personalized bags to carry their materials to various areas of the school building. Additionally, I have been working with our occupational and physical therapists to create a sensory walk to benefit the school community. We have other plans to use removable vinyl to label areas of our school building to foster understanding and communication by targeting vocabulary. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your kindness and generosity in helping me reach this goal for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Collins

  • Let's Give Everyone Something to Talk About

    Funded Sep 10, 2018

I don't know where to begin. This iPad, which may appear like a small item, has given such power to my students. It has helped in more ways than one.

My students who have verbal communication have been using the iPad to play games targeting their language skills. They have learned how to identify the main idea, find details, and have begun working on a program that assists them in appropriately engaging in conversation skills.

For my students who don't have verbal communication, this iPad has served to help in multiple ways. I have been able to trial new programs to better assist my students in communicating with staff and peers. They have also been engaged in applications that are stimulating and draw their attention to working with language in a different way.

Unfortunately, technology isn't always perfect. For my students who already have devices to communicate, this iPad has served as a interim device when theirs needs to be repaired. It has allowed all my students to continue to have a way to communicate and makes sure everyone has something to talk about.

On behalf of all my students and myself, thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me achieve this task.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Collins

My students work hard everyday to achieve their potential. As a speech-language pathologist servicing 6th-8th grade students with various disabilities, including Down's syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, I have seen first hand the lengths my students will go to make us educators proud every day. They are vital members of our community who make coming to work every day a joy. As educators, we have implement various teaching techniques in order to enhance each students' unique learning experience. We focus our teaching points on both academic and vocational skills by providing various related services and small classroom size instruction. The students on my case load have various communication abilities. Some cannot communicate verbally; however, they find their own unique ways to communicate. They use gestures, picture symbols, and various devices from low-tech to high tech.
