How often do you use your Alexa? In my house, we use them all the time! I was curious about how I could utilize this everyday device to facilitate more autonomy & independence for my students that have complex communication needs. Much to my delight, my students' speech-generating devices were compatible with Alexa!!! Instantly kids who barely had a say in their own environment could ask for their favorite songs, play games, and check the weather!!! Some could even turn on lights or activate toys using smart plugs. When COVID hit and schools shut down my students lost access to everything; their friends, teachers, therapists, and all that technology. Suddenly one classroom Alexa could no longer cut it for the 65 students I serve. My administrator and fellow teachers have worked tirelessly to provide our students' families with everything from food and cash assistance to instructional materials and physical therapy equipment. Here is where you come in. As much as I'd love to fund this project myself, I can't. I need your help. They need your help. Please assist me in aiding these students to find their voices again. In a time of isolation and malaise, let's give these kids more opportunities to smile.
