  • Reaching & Teaching Our Students Through Their Learning Styles

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

I would like to begin by expressing my sincerest gratitude to all. I can't tell you how touching it is to witness friends and family from all walks of life, come together to help my class and I reach our goal. This would be impossible without you. Thank you for caring.

Because of your contributions, my students are able to work on letter and sound recognition through phonics activities. Because of you, they're able to work with math tangibles to bring geometry and number sense concepts to life. Because of you, my students now have headphones when working on apps & websites that reinforce their learning across all content areas. Lastly, because of you, I am able to provide my students with custom scaffolds for differentiation, because we have ink to last us through the remainder of the school year.

Ever since we've had these new supports in the classroom, my students cannot wait till it's time to use them all again. The smiles and renewed curiosity that these donations have brought to our classroom are priceless. We are endlessly thankful.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. H

  • Education & Growth Through the Lens of Technology

    Funded Mar 29, 2017

Your donations have been instrumental in the growth of our classroom. Thanks to your donations, our students have been able use the iPad to conduct research projects on modern day poets, create presentations on musicians, as well as use additional resources to support their ideas and contribute to multiple writing pieces. With the iPad, students have also had the opportunity to read along with audio books in the classroom which have helped them all a great deal and contributed to increasing not only their reading levels and comprehension , but their annunciation and fluency as well. Having access to technology has also limited behaviors as the kids were allowed time to play games during choice time.

In addition with the use of a new printer in the classroom, we have been able to incorporate student's ideas by having students produce written pieces to then print out for display in the classroom. Our notebooks and class pens and pencils have been instrumental and creating quality work that establishes a sense of pride in ones own work as you will note in the photos. Of all the products donated to our classroom the kids are thrilled most to have an iPad, headphones, and gel pens. The kids enjoy learning with technology and being able to produce work in fun colors that write with smooth surface. iPads have allowed them to research songs that have figurative language devices, listening to TedTalk discussions led by Socratic discussions, participating in interactive assessments throughout lessons, as well as incentive time which has helped curb behaviors.

Though all of our students are benefiting from the implementation of technology in the classroom, two students in particular have warmed up most. These students in particular have really expressed to taking a liking to being able to have a sense of "privacy" when it comes to reading materials on the iPad that allow them to learn in an intimate setting, where they can read at their individual pace, as well as pause and rewind as needed. This has helped the more timid students with their reading comprehension. As a result, the benefits are evident in class discussions, reading sessions, and even during compression questions that assess a student's understanding on a given literature piece.

Words can't begin to describe how thankful we all are to your generous donations. Thank you so much for your support. The kids and I will forever remember your hearts and contributions to our classroom growth.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. H

My students all live and attend school in the poorest district in the country - The South Bronx. My students also all qualify for free/reduced lunch. I am a special education middle school teacher, and teach a self-contained bridge class (multiple grades in one classroom) with grades 5, 6, and 7. My students are all a wonderful bunch who are classified as having Autism. Their skills range from pre-reading skills, such as letter and sound recognition, to reading at a first grade level - all below the national average. My school's student demographics consist of 3% Asian, 34% African American, 60% Hispanic, 2% White, and 23% are English Language Learners. My students are eager to learn, which is why it's important to keep their experience in the classroom fresh and innovative. In order to accommodate their needs and learning styles, we constantly incorporate new ways to teach, learn, and reflect, all while having fun.
