In my district, more than 65% of students receive free or reduced price lunch. I teach in a school where 93% of students receive free or reduced price lunch. It is a trauma-informed population. The majority of students are below grade level in language arts and mathematics. These students desperately need activities that go beyond the textbook to make learning enjoyable and promote lifelong learning. When reading at grade level is a challenge for students, it creates another barrier to access other content areas. My students need access to manipulatives and other supplies that should be considered basic and essential to 21st-century student learning. These materials will enable students who are not grade level proficient in reading and those who are English Learners to access content and construct understanding in meaningful and enjoyable ways.
