La Mesa Jr. High is located in Canyon Country, a community within the city of Santa Clarita in northwestern Los Angeles County. The school's goal is to offer a safe and welcoming environment to support them. My students, in particular, face additional challenges related to learning disabilities (Autism) that impede their ability to focus and reach their true academic potential. Working with special needs children is very challenging and requires a lot of patience. I need to employ structured protocols that motivate and direct the students to do what is conducive to learning. The process of developing effective strategies to properly guide the students is dynamic. I have found that issuing small, relevant rewards, on a frequent basis, is very effective for motivating students in this setting.
