In order to spark interest in reading, we have begun to incorporate online books to expose students to a greater variety of books and genres. Education is an ever-changing field and we as educators must be able to keep up with the times. The students within our grade enjoy reading about Superheroes, Villains, Athletes, and Pop Culture. Although our school media center has an array of books, we want to ensure that each child has a story that interests them. Headphones will allow them to not only enjoy these stories but for several of my struggling readers, it allows them assistance with reading grade level material and understanding difficult words. Students need to see characters and stories that reflect their lives, issues and show the possibilities when you persevere. The stories, the headphones, and other supplies will be used to do just that -- allow students to see the bigger picture. These materials will not only help prepare students for academic success but will also prepare students for success in the future. During Guided Reading, we have a chance to address major issues in word knowledge, fluency, and comprehension. Mailboxes will act as a mode of communication between students and their teachers and help with organizing completed work. Sticky easel pad paper will allow for student created and teacher created anchor charts to display new strategies for reading. Answer buzzers and dry erase pockets are another great tool for small group instruction.
