  • Helping with Homework at Home

    Funded Aug 24, 2019

Thank you all so much for your support in funding this project. We just held our back to school night and students were thrilled when they got their own personalized homework boxes. Parents were really excited too because most of them didn't have scissors and glue at home for their child to use. Parents were even more excited that it meant students would start receiving homework. I was very pleased with students' success on the first week of homework thanks to the homework boxes they received.

An added bonus to the homework boxes was getting parents to turn out to our back to school night. I advertised to parents that their children would be getting their homework boxes at back to school night and I had a record turn out to the event. I had 11 of 13 parents show up to back to school night and was able to touch base with the other two parents after the event to get their children their homework boxes.

Thank you all again so much for your donations and generosity in helping to support our students. We couldn't have done it will out you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Snodgrass

  • Communication Is Key

    Funded Apr 10, 2019

Thank you so much for your support and to helping fund this project. It has been so beneficial to parents and students. It has provided parents with a place to sign their children in and out as well as communicate with their child's teacher as well. We are able to put reminders up on the white board and put notes and important papers in their child's mailbox.

For students, it has began to teach them name recognition and routines in the classroom. Each morning, students take their folders out of their bag and put it in their mailbox, labeled with their name, for us to check. They also take any art work they complete while in the art center to their mailbox to take home as well. At the end of the day, students stop by their mailbox again to collect their papers and folders to put in their book bags and take home. This is also teaching them responsibility to keep track of and bring their folders each day.

Thank you again so much for your generosity and helping to make their project a reality. It has helped with communication and organization tremendously with our students and families.”

  • Bouncing Balls of Learning

    Funded Mar 13, 2019

The students are loving the new materials. The marble run has been the highlight of the toys and games center. We have had to set up a rotation schedule with a timer so that each child gets a chance to go to the center each day. They have loved building new runs and problem solving how to get the ball to come out where they want it to.

Students have also enjoyed using the large glitter bouncing balls in the block center to not only roll the balls through a tunnel, but also to drop and practice catching them. They have been using the various spiky balls to do the same. Students were amazed at using the ball pump to pump up the balls and see how the air expanded inside.

Thank you all so much for your donations and generosity in making this project a reality for us.”

  • Not All Balls Are Created Equal

    Funded May 6, 2019

Thank you so much for your support and generosity in helping to fund this project. The pictures do not do the students' excitement justice. When the materials arrived, we immediately opened up the boxes to see what was inside. Once we saw what we had, students decided what they wanted to play with first and we set up stations outside for them to rotate through and try the different materials and work on their gross motor skills. Students rotated through a batting station, a kicking station, a throwing station, and a catching station. Hands down, students loved the batting station the most because most of them had never had the opportunity to hit a ball before.

A few days later, our footballs and baseball mitts and balls arrived and the excitement happened all over again. For recess, we took them outside and students partnered up and began to play catch with each other. Not only were students working on their gross motor skills, but they were working on their cooperative play and social skills. Without prompting, students included other students to play in their games with them and began to praise each other for their effort and "highlight reel" plays.

Thank you again for your support and dedication to helping students like mine and providing them with materials and opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have.”

  • Clothes: How Many Different Kinds Can You Find?

    Funded Jan 9, 2019

Thank you so much for your support and your donations. Our students loved the new books and they helped them to further their understanding about clothes. Through the books we were able to explore the different clothes people wear for the different jobs they have, different places they live in the world, and different weather. Students loved being able to look at the books with their bright pictures and ask questions about the things they saw.

While we were studying clothing, I think one of the most powerful lessons students took away was just because people wore different clothing than their own, it wasn't weird, it was just different. While looking at clothing from different cultures, we were able to instill in them it was just different and by the end of the unit, students were regularly using the word different to describe what they were seeing rather than weird.

Thank you again for your support on this project and for further our students' education and understanding.”

  • I Won't Trash My Future

    Funded Nov 24, 2018

Thank you so much for your support of our Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle project. Thanks to the books you helped to provide, students were able to use them for inspiration in creating their own thoughts and ideas about recycling. Some of the children's favorite books were the Green Start board books which were made out of cardboard boxes. They were fascinated by the fact these books used to be a cardboard box. It kicked their creativity into high gear to figure out how to turn their own cardboard boxes into books.

When students went to the art center, they used inspiration from Kenya's Art to create their own art projects out of the recycled materials we had collected. The ideas students came up with were endless. And since the inspiration for this study came from students' interest in trash, the books on garbage trucks and the landfill were great to further their understanding. Most students knew you put trash in the trash can and then the garbage truck came and picked it up, but they had no idea what happened after the garbage truck picked it up. These books allowed for them to see where the trash went.

Thank you again for your support on this project. Not only have these materials had a positive impact on our students' understanding this year, but they will be able to provide a positive impact on our future classes as well. We could not have provided these materials without you and your support.”

  • Organizing Our Success

    Funded Dec 11, 2018

Thank you so much for helping my students and I to get organized. Thanks to the wonderful toy bins we received, students have become masters at cleaning up and have gotten to use so many more of their materials now that they have a home. We were able to put several of the bins in the block center to organize their blocks and animals. We also but several in the toys and game center where they have been able to store some of their bulkier toys.

I have also been able to use the book bins and magnetic bins to get myself organized and be a more effective teacher for my students. With all of my teaching materials organized within reach of our meeting rug, I am able to grab and go and know right where everything is.

Thank you again for your support and donations to help make this project a success.”

  • Watch Me Build a Building

    Funded Nov 28, 2018

Thank you so much for the donations to fund this project. Thanks to your donations, I was able to provide books and materials for my students to explore their building unit of study. The students loved the new cardboard blocks and have been having so much fun being able to building structures big enough for them to fit in without fear of getting hurt if it topples over. They have also enjoyed the porcupine blocks and being able to build things with wheels.

My students also love books and have enjoyed being able to look at and read books about the topic. Thanks to the books, I was able to provide them with multiple pictures and stories about construction and building. These books helped them to gain the back ground knowledge to apply to their play and really helped to develop their vocabulary and understanding of the topic.

Thank you again so much for your donations and support. I couldn't do it without you.”

  • Cooking Up Success With Young Chefs

    Funded Oct 1, 2018

Thank you so much for your donations and helping to bring cooking into our classroom. The first time the students saw the cooking equipment they couldn't believe they were going to get a chance to use it and to help cook. Many students comment on how at home they weren't allowed to touch things like a can opener or spatula. The first cooking project we did was to make gingerbread cookies after reading The Gingerbread Man. We took the opportunity to work with the children on building their cooking vocabulary and introducing them to several different cooking tools they had never seen before, like the rolling pin and sifter.

Thank you again for helping to make this project a reality and giving our young students the opportunity to explore with cooking. They ask almost daily when they are going to get to cook again.”

  • Help Warm Hands to Help Warm Minds

    Funded Sep 14, 2018

Thank you so much for your generosity and for making this project a reality. Our students were surprised with their hats, mittens, and scarfs on the day of a field trip when the weather had started to turn cold. The majority of our students had come to school with no mittens or hats for the trips and parents were very grateful when they heard their child would have them for the trip. Each child got to pick out their own set and were so excited, especially those who had been coming in with cold hands.

At the end of the field trip, we collected them for a second field trip we were taking the following week and wanted to make sure all our kids were warm on that trip as well. After the second trip though, we let the students keep their sets and take them home with them. It puts a smile on my face to see them come in with their sets on and know they had a warm walk to school that day because of the donations you all made. Many of them still talk about their sets each day they wear them and ask if we remember when we gave it to them. Thank you again for your generosity and for helping to make this project happen and help keep our students warm.”

My students attend a Title I school in DC and are some of the most amazing children you will ever meet. They go through things on a daily basis that I couldn't imagine going through, yet come to school with a smile on their face and ready to learn because they know if they come to school they have someone they can count on. They know that I'm going to be there every day for them even if no one at home is their for them. My students learn just as much from me as I do from them every year.
