Companion Independent Novels to Lord of the Flies
Funded Oct 19, 2023I am so, so excited to share with you how thrilled my students are to begin Hunger Games at the end of this month. We are wrapping up The Lord of the Flies, which I will have to remember to share so more pictures with you, this upcoming week. They have enjoyed getting into that novel. However, I know they are much more excited to start the new one as their independent novel study. After the release of the newest movie to the Hunger Games world, many of my students and I have been discussing that. It has had a rippling affect. Others are now showing a lot of interest.
They will be reading this novel on their own. Since this is only my third year teaching English, my amazing co-teacher shared her independent novel requirements with me. I included a quick picture of the paper she gave me. I can't wait to tie the two novels together.”

Thematic Relevance To Today!
Funded Apr 6, 2023I wanted to express my deepest gratitude for your generous donation, which has allowed us to purchase a classroom set of Lord of the Flies for my students at Honey Grove High School. While we have not yet begun the novels, the anticipation and excitement among our students are palpable, and I wanted to share with you the impact your support has already had on our school community.
Many of our donors, like yourself, share a love for reading, but you raised an important point about the skills and lessons introduced by these new texts. These novels provide us with a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the world of literature and foster critical thinking skills among our students. With this new set of books, we can explore themes, character development, symbolism, and much more. It not only promotes a deeper understanding of literature but also helps students develop their analytical and interpretive abilities. Moreover, it allows us to cultivate a sense of empathy and open-mindedness as we explore diverse characters and perspectives.
In our classroom, reading is an essential part of the learning process. We believe that reading extends beyond mere enjoyment; it is a tool for building knowledge and developing well-rounded individuals. With these new texts, our classroom environment has become even more dynamic. The students are eager to embark on this literary journey, and they are already engaging in discussions about the books even before we officially begin.
Your generosity has had a profound impact on our students, instilling a love for reading and learning that will serve them well throughout their lives. These novels are not just books; they are keys to unlocking the potential and future of our students.
Once again, thank you for your generous contribution. We are excited about the journey that lies ahead and are truly grateful for your support.”

Mrs. Williams
Give the Gift of Literacy
Funded Sep 21, 2022I'm sorry that I am late on letting you know how much these amazing donation has been! When I brought the books to school in a large box, it was like Christmas morning. Some of the kids that swore they hated reading were at my desk going through books. We have been incorporating time in class to read. Just the other day I had given them 15 minutes. When the timer went off, they all complained and wanted to read for the remainder of the period. My heart almost burst with joy, so I had to let them read! It's amazing seeing high school freshman excited about a book. I have had some that have devoured books, and others I am just thrilled to be reading during silent time! I will never be able to thank you enough for this gift!”

Funded May 6, 2022We just started the novel not long ago. I can't even begin to describe how much my students are learning and enjoying as we read the novel. I found the audiobook that is being read by the author, Elie Wiesel. In my regular RLA classes, we are listening to it as the students read along. In my honors class, we have listened to certain parts. His accent and knowing that he is the person that experienced these horrific events have brought the book to life for my students. I have 56 students in total. Every single one of them is enjoying the book. They beg me each day to cancel all the lesson so that we can continue. The discussions that this books and activities have led to have blown me away. My students are learning so much about humanity. We even brought in a discussion about how bullying others is how the Holocaust started. I am beyond grateful for your generous donation. This is my first time teaching a whole class novel. I was a former Spanish teacher for 16 years. I wasn't sure how students would react or engage. To my surprise, this has been such an amazing experience for my students and myself. Once again, thank you so much. I am so much more confident now in teaching RLA!”

Funded Jul 20, 2021It is very difficult to find the words to describe how incredibly grateful I am for your gracious donation. Sadly, we don't have a school librarian and there are not many books to choose from in our library. This gift has been such a blessing. I have always believed that every student is able to enjoy reading; we just have to find the right book!
We are coming to the end of the first 5 weeks of school. I assigned a self-selected reading assignment and was able to offer so many books to my 9th grade Honors English class. We spend about the first 10 minutes on class with silent reading. I have not once had to ask a student to put away his/her phone and pick up a book. This is a small class and we also take a day each week to update the class on what's happening in their novels. It is absolutely amazing to see teenagers put away their phones and discuss books. It's even more exciting to hear another student say, "Oh, I can't wait to read that one!" I am looking forward to their "Book Cover Project" Presentations that we will begin to work on next week.
I had one parent already contact me and ask how I was able to get her son to read a novel! She informed me that she has never seen him sit down in the evenings and read because he was enjoying the book so much.”
