  • Listening to Learn

    Funded Aug 15, 2024

I just wanted to say thank you so much for supporting my project, Listening to Learn. This project was able to provide my classroom with 25 headphones for students to use.

The ability for all students to have their own pair of headphones has immediately impacted my classroom instruction. The headphones allow students to work independently on technology based district assessments without distractions from the room around them. It also helps students focus when they complete other learning activities on their iPad.

Thank you again for your support of my spectacular second grade students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thomas

  • Meet Me On The Rug!

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

I am once again blown away by the support that I have received from both family and friends for my 2nd grade classroom! My students were so excited to see our new classroom rug when it was delivered last week!

Since receiving the classroom rug, we have had multiple chance to utilize it during the school day. During recess students enjoy playing games with each other or building towers with magnetic tiles. We have used to it meet for our morning meeting. We have also sat together to read aloud books and to play math games.

A classroom rug seems like such a simple item but it really brings our classroom together for play and learning. Thank you again for your support!!”

    Mrs. Thomas

  • Explaining Your Thinking in Math

    Funded Sep 20, 2022

I am again so thankful for the support of Donors Choose and wonderful donors like you who help support my students and classroom! The materials in this project have already started being used in the classroom.

Math notebooks have now been given to every single 2nd grader. This has allowed students to be more actively engaged in our lessons and lets students show their work and thinking. It has been so helpful for everyone to be prepared for class with these notebooks. Please see the photos for a recent example of our notebooks in use with learning about place value. I have also been able to use the color ink cartridges in my printer for various projects. One example is our math word wall which provides students with vocabulary and colorful images and definitions. It truly brightens up the classroom (see one of the photos to see our word wall).

I am so lucky to have your support and my students and I are so thankful!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thomas

  • A Sensational Start to Second Grade

    Funded Aug 6, 2022

I am so thankful for your support of my classroom!! It has been such a joy receiving these supplies for the classroom and sharing them with my 2nd graders.

My students have really loved having personal white boards as well as markers with erasers built in to use during math instruction. This allows all students to share their work. The welcome to school pencils were a wonderful gift for students at the beginning of the year as well. One item that I look forward to using (that was ordered as a replacement item) is the photo holder boxes. I plan on using these for supplies for math learning areas that can help students work on building their math skills.

Thank you again for your support! I am so very lucky to have the support of some many generous family and friends as well as the kindness of strangers!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thomas

  • Learning to Love Literature

    Funded Jul 30, 2022

I am so thankful for your support of my classroom!! It has been such a joy receiving these new books for the classroom and sharing them with my 2nd graders.

Students have really loved reading "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and " Captain Underpants" when they are in the mood for a fun story. They have also enjoyed reading "Who Would Win" when they want to read a non-fiction text. We have also read "What Does It Mean To Be Kind" and "Be Who You Are" during our restorative circle time where we talk about character education and showing kindness towards each other.

Thank you again for your support! I am so very lucky to have the support of some many generous family and friends as well as the kindness of strangers!”

  • Bridging the Gaps With Daily Math

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

I am, once again, blown away by the generosity of donors through Donors Choose! You donation to this project purchased 100 Daily Math Journals for our 3 classes of fifth graders. Students were so excited to use receive this resource and to begin to use it during our intervention period.

It has been a tricky transition back to full time in person instruction, especially with many of our students not being in person since March of 2020 when they were in 3rd grade. The effects of remote and/or hybrid instruction have especially been noticeable in math. These Daily Math Journals have provided a great resource for reteaching concepts that students need additional practice with.

Thank you again for your donations and generosity to my wonderful fifth grade students! I can't thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thomas

  • Charging Our Learning

    Funded Apr 18, 2021

It is with my sincerest gratitude that I am writing to thank you for your donation to my classroom. Schools are so much more than just a place for learning and community support helps to bring classrooms to life.

I have began to read the text "Hacking School Discipline" and it has provided me with much insight for restorative practices to use with my students. Relationships matter more now than ever in a school. The classroom charters for our iPads will be so important for when students return for in-person hybrid instruction in 2 weeks! It will ensure that students have a fully charged device to use throughout the day. The "Fifth Graders are #1" pencils will be handed out to students at our upcoming supply pick up and as they -return for in-person hybrid instruction. They will love receiving a small gift!

Thank you again for your support of my classroom. I am beyond blessed to have continued support for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thomas

  • A Picture of Math

    Funded Aug 1, 2020

Thank you so much for your support of my classroom!! I am so lucky to receive the donation of a document camera. My district has started the year 100% virtual which makes this document camera even more useful.

One way I use the document camera is for direct instruction of mathematics. The camera allows me to model how to solve problems on paper and then project it via Microsoft Teams to my students at home. This allows students to receive grade level instruction in a remote setting. I can also use the camera to record lessons for students to view at another time.

Thank you again for the donation of a document camera to my classroom and for helping my wonderful group of fifth graders have access to math instruction!”

    Mrs. Thomas

  • Organizing for Learning

    Funded Jul 17, 2020

Thank you so much for your support of my classroom and for helping me to get much needed supplies for classroom organization and basic classroom materials. Due to Covid-19, our school has begun the year in a full virtual setting so I have not had the chance to share these supplies with my students. I am, however, preparing for the students to return whenever it is possible.

With materials from this project, I have already organized classroom books for students to read during independent reading. Centers are being organized for easy access during math intervention periods. Hall passes with lanyards are displayed so students can easily access them during class. Much needed classroom supplies like a new pencil sharpener and craft supplies are also ready for the students to return. The classroom is also decorated thanks to this project.

Thank you again for your support!! My students and I are so grateful for your donations to this project!”

  • School Supplies for Success

    Funded Jan 2, 2020

I am blown away to receive support for this project!! The supplies provided to my classroom have been so important to helping students complete classwork. Having basic school supplies like pencils and pens is crucial to help students succeed in the classroom. The pencils have been used on a daily basis for students to complete their problem sets and express their mathematical thinking. The pens have been used to help students self-correct their own math work and to help them learn from their mistakes. Students have commented that they love the "fun colors" and "fancy" pens that they get to use while in my classroom.

Having a bright, lively classroom helps create a more positive classroom environment.

The colored paper and color printer cartridges have helped to decorate my classroom in a more lively way as seen by some of the photos that I have shared. The card stock has been used to create flash cards for students to practice their math facts at home with their families as well as for in-class activities like SCOOT.

Finally, I am in the process of reading the book "Math Fact Fluency" and I really look forward to sharing what I learn about research-based math fluency with my colleagues. Thank you again for your support for my classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thomas

I am very excited about returning to a classroom teaching position after spending the past few years as a math specialist and I am lucky that I will be remaining at the same building with wonderful students that I have already developed relationships with. They are all unique in their own way and have the biggest hearts. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to be their math teacher. West Hertel Academy is a melting pot for students all over the world. We have many students who are English language learners that are new to the United States and who are refugees from other countries. The majority of students are also from low income house. Our school aims to help these students succeed and become lifelong learners.
