  • Math And Science Digital Learning

    Funded Mar 29, 2016

Words can never express my joy and gratitude for the materials

donated. I would like to thank you so much for helping to fund my project. My students are hard pressed to bring in materials and every little bit helps. You're donation will help my students tremendously with their reading comprehension, as well as math and science concepts. By being able to share computers, the students can "play against" each other on Math games all the while actually learning by reviewing.

My students enjoy having stories read to them by an online reading program that uses Math related stories in both English and/or Spanish. The headphones (that were also donated through DonorsChoose) will help them listen to the stories recorded so they can take test to check their reading fluency as well as their comprehensions levels. All these supplies will enhance my lessons and provided wonderful experiences for the students.

    Again thank you very much!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pazos

  • Combining Reading, Science, and Math for S.T.E.M. Success!

    Funded Feb 26, 2016

I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for helping and empowering children.

The tools that you have funded will enable students to understand the math concepts by using them in a real world scenario. In addition, I will be able to demonstrate the importance of incorporating science to the world of math and reading. The students all got to share the books and then take reading comprehension tests on the computers. They were also able to hear the stories using the headphones donated.

I hope to share with my students and co-workers a new technique in learning. Thank you so much!!! I can't wait to start using the math tools with the students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pazos

  • iPads to the Rescue for STEM Enrichment Activities!

    Funded Apr 9, 2015

The students in my 5th Grade Science class were extremely happy and excited when our iPads arrived. They could not believe that it was true. The fact that a stranger out there somewhere had generously donated the iPads to us was beyond their comprehension. Seeing them arrive that day became so real. They decided to start a "pay it forward" until the end of the school year. (They collected some money for two students that could not afford the end of the year 5th grade luncheon celebration!)

The students were able to use the iPads to work on Gizmos (an online Science Hands-On Labs website) as well as do activity questions on FCAT Explorer (another online site). With iPad apps, they were also able to see videos on StudyJams and BrainPop.

The most important thing I saw with this donation was the students desire to help others as you had helped them. We have used the iPads in many academic ways. I truly believe, however, that the fact the students themselves came up with the idea of to pay it forward meant more to me as a teacher. This donation opened their eyes to the spirit of giving, which I hope will stay with them forever. They helped two other students as I mentioned before. In helping others, we also help ourselves (the future).

Again thank you for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pazos

  • Using STEM and Asus Tablets to Create Veggie Gardens

    Funded Oct 14, 2014

I would like to thank you again for your generous support. When the Asus Transformer t100 Tablets arrived the students were beyond excited. The students in the Science Club immediately wanted to set up the laptop/tablets. As a team, we proceeded to program the 4 laptops/tablets and add the apps we thought we'd need for our upcoming vegetable garden project.

I divided the Science Club into teams and each team was responsible for a certain part of the project. One team had to research making vegetable garden boxes. We will be using some wood benches that were going to be thrown out. By recycling the benches we are helping our school save money on the purchase of these boxes. The Science Club with the help of our custodians, Assistant Principals, and a few parents will cut the wood parts and the students will make the boxes. The boxes will then be painted and ready for the seeds.

Another group is researching the types of seeds we will be planting and what they need for survival. The third team will then be responsible for the data that must be kept on the garden.

The tablets are helping the students do research as well as work as a team. Because they must share the tablets, they are learning cooperation and sharing. Working in teams will prepare them for working in a global community. Utilizing refurnished wood and other recyclable materials are helping them with understanding the need to protect our fragile ecology. This project will have many benefits that the students will take with them and hopefully use in the future!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pazos

  • Science through Technology

    Funded Aug 23, 2014

Thank so much for the donations that made this wonderful project possible. The 5th grade students have been using the lap top inside and outside of the classroom to complete science experiments. They have been able to research information on density to create boats from different materials as well as save their information on jump drives to use later. Students who do not have computers at home can come to class easy and work on Gizmos and Discovery education. Without this lap top, many of the outside Science projects would have been very hard to complete.

Again, thank you for your generosity! When the community at large helps students achieve their goals, I believe in the future these same students will "pay it forward" to other students in need.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pazos

  • Sciencesaurus' Rock!

    Funded Dec 5, 2013

My students and I were extremely happy and thankful to have received our Sciencesaurus books. It was like another Christmas for us. Our school is not used to receiving such wonderful gifts!

The Science Books we have been using are dated and do not have a lot of the material we need to cover in 5th grade. The Sciencesaurus books have all the material we need as well as modern updated pictures. The language of the material is at an easier level for all the students to understand. It explains the concepts in a less complex way making learning better. The experiments given are easy to follow and fun to do.

Again, I want to thank you for this incredible gift. We will be enjoying our books for years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pazos

  • Scientific Inquiry Using iPads

    Funded Sep 17, 2013

I would like to thank everyone who helped with our project Scientific Inquiry Using iPads. The students were very excited when the iPad was delivered to us. It was a wonderfully new experience for them to see that complete strangers were willing to help our school improve our science department. We started using the iPads right away.

The first time we used the iPad was during a physical and chemical change activity using chocolate chips. Since we encourage having more than 3 trials per experiment, using the iPads to record data reduced the time it takes to record information using paper and pencil. The students were able to come up in groups to do their experiment. Each group is considered a trial and each group was able to record and photograph each procedure. We then used all the information to graph our results. The iPads helped reduce paperwork time and increase actual experiment time. This in turn increases learning. The students mentioned they felt like real scientist using the iPads. The students have also used the iPads to find information for their Science Projects as well as do simple experiments using a program called Gizmos.

Again, I would like to thank everyone who donated. I know this lesson of good-will and generosity will forever stay in the hearts and minds of our students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pazos

My students go to a public elementary school in Florida. We are a Title 1 school, as a majority of the students are on free or reduced lunch. A large population of our students are ESOL 1 so they are non- English or limited English speakers. Although our school is predominately Hispanic, we do have students from many non-Hispanic countries. All of them are, however, very eager to learn and explore the scientific world.
