Learning looks and feels different from years past. Desks are no longer face forward and the teacher is no longer in front of the class lecturing. Students are now given choices on where and how to sit and participate in their learning. Studies have shown that by keeping our bodies active there is enhanced mental clarity due to the increased blood flow to the brain. This makes active choices and activity vital to both learning and our physical and neurological health. In addition, students feel more comfortable and this allows them to be more ‘on task’ and engaged in their work. As adults, it is difficult to sit all day in a chair. How much more difficult is it for a young child? We all have a special place where we like to read or work, so why not let our students have those options in the classroom? My plan for flexible seating options include several areas around the room where students can sit or stand depending on their needs at the time. My ideal seating scenario would include one table for standing, one for sitting on the floor, and four others with different stool, cushion, or chair options.
