My students are energetic, entertaining, and want to succeed. However, they do face a variety of and challenges. Most students speak Spanish at home, and a large portion of students read below grade level. Many of their parents-- and sometimes the students themselves-- work long hours, and often struggle to make ends meet. Some have family members in other countries or face issues with gangs, drugs, and peer pressure. Reading is not high on my students' priority list, but it is a powerful tool that I would love them all to master!
Many of my kids have had negative experiences with books because they choose books that didn't engage them or books they struggled to understand. I would love to help my students fall in love with reading and understand the incredible power that books hold. Many of my kids have never been able to travel and many can't envision a future for themselves. Books can open a world of possibilities to my students in a way that no other experience can.
