Could you sit in a hard chair at a desk for 8 hours a day? Of course not! Neither can teenagers. I teach 7th grade English in a district of phenomenal kids. The creativity they have to offer is something the world should see. However, how can you get your creative thoughts moving at a hard wooden desk? They need to spread out, they need to be comfortable to read a story, or write a great poem.
Students are not conforming robots; they have different learning styles. Flexible seating provides a creative alternative to the "desk and chair" classroom set-up, by providing students options based on their learning style. While one student learns best in a cozy chair with a lap desk, another learns better sitting on an exercise ball so he can move around without distracting his classmates. Among the numerous scientifically proven benefits to flexible seating in a classroom, such as increased communication among students, improvement in teamwork, increased focus, and decrease in student behavior issues, it is important to me that my students feel safe.
My students are with me two hours per day. For those two hours, I have the opportunity to shield them from their day-to-day struggles, as they do come from an economically challenged and violent area. I immerse them in reading and writing, and introduce them to concepts that challenge and stretch their minds. I give them something no one can take away; an education. I know my students, and I know their needs. I'm not a politician or a corporation. I'm simply a teacher who is in the classroom every day with my kids, and am respectfully asking for flexible seating pieces to help these awesome students be the best they can possibly be. I thank you in advance for your consideration.
