  • Writing Nook to Inspire Creativity and Peer Editing

    Funded Sep 28, 2018

Thank you for providing the shag rug and four pillows for my classroom. The pillows are usually one of the first things students grab as they enter the classroom. As you can see from some of the photos, the students tend to lean on and hold the pillows when they are sitting in the desks. They help to make the students a little more comfortable while they are writing. Other students choose to sit on the rug during independent reading or writing time. Some of them just like the opportunity to sit on the floor, and others like to sit close together to discuss what they have been working on.

There are many worthy DonorsChoose.org projects posted by deserving teachers, and I am always humbled when one of mine is funded, especially by local members of our community. Thank you for choosing my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Marquart

  • More Resources to Make Our Classroom Healthy and Clean

    Funded Sep 8, 2018

Thank you for providing Puffs facial tissues, alcohol-free hand sanitizer, and LifeSavers mints. We are about eleven weeks into the school year, and we are on our sixth or seventh box of Puffs and our second bottle of hand sanitizer. I don't have any hard data, but my own observations tell me that having soft facial tissues and hand sanitizer available for students helps them stay healthy and in school. Germs spread very quickly when students share desks, Chromebooks, and pencils. The resources you have so generously provided are helping them stay well. Thank you for thinking of my students' well being and for supporting my classroom.”

  • Resources to make our Classroom Healthy and Clean

    Funded Sep 1, 2018

We just finished our sixth week of school, and we are already using our third box of Puffs Plus Lotion Facial Tissues. With allergies, colds, and other runny-nose causing germs out there, my students are very appreciative of the softness of the Puffs Plus Lotion. Thanks to your donations, we have Germ-X Foaming Hand Sanitizer and Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to help keep those germs from spreading. The students are thankful for the healthy snacks. They especially like the Smartfood popcorn. It's a favorite, along with the Jolly Ranchers.

Thank you for keeping my classroom clean and my students healthy.”

  • Healthy Snacks for Scholars

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

This is not my first DonorsChoose.org project for healthy snacks for my students, but every year the response from my students is the same. I hear questions like, "Wait, these are for us? We can just take one for FREE?" There are also a few students who whisper to a friend something like, "Oh, good. All I had for breakfast was a bag of Doritos. I'm starving."

Although the gratitude from students is the same year after year, I'm always surprised at how much of a difference a little kindness, just a granola bar and some juice, can make. Being able to provide students with a healthy snack during the first few weeks of school helps to create a positive, friendly atmosphere and shows students that I care about them, and so do complete strangers. We care about their well-being and their focus in the classroom.

Thank you for supporting my students.”

  • Sticks for Girls' K-2 Lacrosse Team

    Funded Feb 16, 2018

The girls on our city's K-2 lacrosse team are incredible. I love to watch their teamwork on and off the field. They give it their all, no matter what the unpredictable spring weather holds. Their passing and catching skills have increased exponentially since the season started. Just a few months ago, some of the girls didn't even know how to hold a stick. Now they know the rules of lacrosse and how to throw and catch. Because of your donation, they have begun to form friendships that will possibly last a lifetime. Your donation has helped them to get outdoors and learn what it feels like to be part of a team.

Thank you for your commitment to team sports and to our city's children.”

  • Collaboration Station: Markerboard Top Table and Chairs

    Funded Mar 7, 2018

Thank you for the clover-shaped markertop table and four chairs. The table is a hit! Not only do students love the chance to sit together at a table to collaborate and work together, they are taking advantage of the dry erase top. Seniors have been sharing ideas for their character analysis essays and have been able to list character traits on the table. Juniors are in the midst of a research paper and have been able to take quick notes about in-text citations. Word about the table has gotten out and students who are not even in my class stop by to check out the table.

The chairs are comfortable and easily roll across the floor. If I ever need to clear a space, they fold up for storage.

Thank you for making this project a reality. I'm always looking for ways to encourage students to discuss their writing, and flexible seating seems to be the key to collaboration.”

  • Goggles for K-2 Lacrosse Team

    Funded Mar 1, 2018

Our girls K-2 lacrosse team is amazing! The girls have played three games this season and won two of them. While winning is great, the important thing is that these girls are learning to work together while playing a team sport. I love seeing them give high-fives and cheer for each other from the sidelines. They are starting to form friendships that I know will last long after the season is over.

Thank you for providing four pairs of goggles for the girls. Because of your donation, four girls who may not have been able to afford the proper equipment can play lacrosse this season.”

  • Frequently Banned and Challenged Books

    Funded Dec 9, 2017

Just pulling these frequently banned and challenged books from the box sparked some questions and discussion from my juniors and seniors. Most of them were surprised to learn that books that they have been assigned to read in their English classes in middle and high school have been banned or challenged in other parts of the country. Some of the more popular titles - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Lord of the Flies, and Of Mice and Men - were the most surprising to students. A few even talked about planning to go see A Wrinkle in Time at the movie theater. They had no idea that it was a book, especially a banned book.

Unwind is a title that none of my students had heard of before these books arrived. After reading the back cover and doing a little research online, it is becoming quite popular. Those Dystopian novels are always a hit with high school students.

Thank you for providing students with the chance to read and discuss banned and challenged books. We not only discuss the contents of the books and why they were banned, but we also talk about censorship and how it should be used.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Marquart

  • Healthy Snacks for Healthy High School Students

    Funded Sep 7, 2017

Your donation allowed my students to to enjoy a healthy snack, which helped them to remain focused in class. The Pepperidge Farm Goldfish were a hit, along with the Welch's juice. Some students had never heard of a Larabar. Because of this project and your donation, some high school students were able to try a new gluten-free healthy snack.

If students missed breakfast, they were allowed to stop by my classroom in the morning to grab a snack before heading to their first period classes. I shared the snacks with my entire classroom when they needed to focus on their Regents review or writing assignments. It's amazing what a little food and drink can do for a student who needs to focus in class.

Thank you for your continued support.”

  • Battle on the Seneca: Lacrosse Sticks for K-2 Team (II)

    Funded Aug 9, 2017

I wish you could have seen the look on the boys' faces when I was able to give them new sticks. Thanks to donors like you, this is the second round of lacrosse sticks that I have been able to give to these boys. This is the first time that our team has decided to play during the fall, and many of them have been using broken sticks. It's not unusual to have to tape a stick during halftime or between games because the sidewall is cracked. Now that we have a collection of new sticks, the boys can focus on playing without worrying about an equipment malfunction on the field.

Thank you for supporting lacrosse and these young athletes. Your thoughtfulness will not be forgotten.”

    With gratitude,

I teach English to 11th and 12th graders at a public high school in Central New York. Approximately 74% of the students in our district receive free or reduced lunches and about 25% speak a language other than English at home. We never have a dull moment in my classroom, and my students always surprise me with their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
