  • Butterflies for Bullying (Part Two)

    Funded Dec 20, 2012

I wish you could see our butterfly display! We created over one hundred hand-painted butterflies and close to as many origami butterflies to mail to the Holocaust Memorial Museum's Butterfly Project. We have the display hanging prominently in front of our main office to help celebrate the National Days of Remembrance and our local Festival of Nations. At the end of the month, we will be packaging and mailing the butterflies to Texas.

I have quite an eclectic group of students this year and some of them struggle with academics and with their social lives. Having open conversations about bullying has helped students realize they are not alone. The book, Bullying in Schools, has become a priceless resource and an excellent way to kick off these uncomfortable discussions. The book is full of short, true stories of students who have encountered bullying.

The timing of this classroom project could not be better. My school is requiring every student and teacher in the building to take a quiz on bullying next month. Each teacher is required to teach a lesson to accompany the quiz. While some teachers are hesitant to broach the subject, I know my students will not struggle to discuss bullying because we have been having open conversations for so long.

Thank you for your commitment to public education and the well being of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Marquart

  • A Book Is A Loaded Gun In The House Next Door. Burn It.

    Funded Oct 20, 2012

Thank you for providing my students the opportunity to read Fahrenheit 451, a classic futuristic novel about censorship and the importance of thinking for oneself. Students are enjoying reading the novel and one student finished the graphic novel in only two days! The teacher pack and audio CD are very helpful. Students are able to listen to the CD during study hall and after school.

While we are not finished reading the book yet, we have been able to talk about some of the themes and big ideas presented. Restricting freedoms, especially free speech, is a topic that teenagers feel strongly about. Earlier this year we read Anthem by Ayn Rand and last year some students read Animal Farm by George Orwell. They were able to draw parallels between those two novels and Fahrenheit 451, which is a connection I love to see.

Thank you again for your generous donations. My students and I appreciate your thoughtfulness.”

  • MLA All The Way!

    Funded Nov 16, 2012

My job is to prepare my students for college, where they will be doing a lot of research. I want to give them a head start and teach them about MLA and APA documentation before they leave my classroom.

Thank you for providing the resources to purchase a class set of The St. Martin's Pocket Guide to Research and Documentation. These spiral bound guidebooks are priceless! Having a copy for each student to use while in the classroom has made the process of teaching research and documentation so much more manageable. The format is student friendly, and the book offers numbered steps for citing sources.

I have had students from other classes come to my room asking to borrow a copy of the pocket guide. They have become very popular at my high school, and I imagine other teachers will be writing proposals to get a set of their own.

Thank you for this priceless addition to my classroom curriculum.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Marquart

  • HP Technology for Senior Portfolios (Part 2)

    Funded Mar 9, 2012

Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to make their work stand out. By providing the funds to purchase the extra ink cartridges for our classroom HP Color LaserJet Printer, you have reminded the students that their work is important and they should always strive to put forth their best effort. I have assigned portfolios in the past but have never had the means for students to showcase their work in color.

In addition to being a memento of senior year, the portfolio will be an avenue for students to display their best work. They can take these portfolios with them to college admittance interviews and to job interviews. For many of the seniors, these portfolios will be a reminder of all of the hard work they have done this year.

Again, thank you for your generous donation and your commitment to public education.”

  • A Flashdrive for Every Student

    Funded Mar 9, 2012

My students were stunned when I pulled out the box of flash drives. I heard a chorus of, "Can I have one? I want one. Are those for us?"

Using the computers for English projects has been a challenge for students who were not able to purchase a flash drive. Now they can work on their projects during English class, during study halls, and at home or at the public library. Those students who have computer access at home but don't have printing capabilities were able to utilize the flash drives as well. They saved the work on the flash drive at home and then printed their materials at school.

Having flash drives to share with students has made research writing and other computer projects much less stressful for the students. Thank you for your generosity. My students and I are very grateful for your donation.”

  • HP Technology for Senior Portfolios

    Funded Feb 5, 2012

Thank you for providing the funds to purchase the HP Color LaserJet Printer for my classroom. The seniors have been working diligently on their portfolios and are very proud of the work they have done. Seeing their work in color and not the bland black and white we typically see has made their work stand out.

After word of the color printer spread, seniors started emailing files to me that they worked on at home. Having the opportunity to print their title pages and other assignments in color motivated them to spend time to give their portfolios more pizzazz and personality. These portfolios will showcase their best work and can be taken with them to college admittance interviews and job interviews. They will also be a memento of their senior year and all the hard work they have done.

Thank you again for your thoughtfulness. Your donation has helped me to motivate my seniors to do their best work. ”

  • "The Help" will Help us Address Bullying (Part 4)

    Funded Dec 23, 2011

Thank you for your kind donation to my classroom. The students are excited to read a contemporary novel with a movie tie-in. The Help and the accompanying literature, Bullying in Schools, have both helped generate discussion about society and class, along with race and gender. A few of the students have already seen the movie for The Help and continuously talk about the similarities and differences between the book and the film adaptation. We are not finished reading the book yet, but I'm already looking forward to seeing their reactions when they reach the end of the book.

To accompany The Help, we have been reading passages from Bullying in Schools. Reading these excerpts has given students the opportunity to speak and write about their own experiences with bullying.

Without your thoughtful donation, we would not have the opportunity to read a contemporary book that has sparked such insightful class discussion, along with excerpt from Bullying in Schools. We appreciate your generosity. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Marquart

  • "The Help" Will Help Us Address Bullying (Part 3)

    Funded Dec 14, 2011

Words cannot express how your thoughtfulness has impacted my classroom. The students are enjoying The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Reading a contemporary novel with a movie tie-in is an expected treat for these juniors who are accustomed to reading the classics and prepping for the state tests. We are not finished reading the book yet, but I'm already looking forward to seeing their reactions when they reach the end of the book.

To accompany The Help, we have been reading passages from Bullying in Schools. Reading these excerpts has given students the opportunity to speak and write about their own experiences with bullying.

Thank you for providing the funds to purchase copies of The Help by Kathryn Stockett and Bullying in Schools for my high school juniors. These materials have sparked insightful class discussion. We appreciate your generosity. ”

  • "The Help" Will Help Us Address Bullying (Part 2)

    Funded Dec 17, 2011

Thank you for your generous donation to my classroom. The students are enjoying The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Reading this contemporary novel is a welcome change from the classics they are accustomed to reading in class. I expected the girls to be excited about reading a book with strong female characters and am pleasantly surprised to see the boys reading as well.

In addition to reading The Help, we have been reading passages from Bullying in Schools to spark discussion about bullying. Students have had opportunities to write about real and fictional bullying experiences.

Thank you again for your donation. Without it, we would not have had the chance to read a popular book that has brought about such insightful discussion. We also would not have had the materials to begin a discussion on bullying. My students and I appreciate your generosity. ”

I teach English to 11th and 12th graders at a public high school in Central New York. Approximately 74% of the students in our district receive free or reduced lunches and about 25% speak a language other than English at home. We never have a dull moment in my classroom, and my students always surprise me with their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
