Crew Supplies for Social Emotional Learning
Funded Nov 1, 2024Thank you so much for the materials to enhance my crew and support students in their mental health. My group has loved using the Letz Chat teen conversation cards to have deeper share-outs and discuss issues and emotions that they otherwise might not feel as comfortable talking about. We were able to discuss how we can support our mental health through small craft projects like designing pencil cases, and we worked together to build camaraderie as a group to make candles for our loved ones as holiday gifts. Thank you again for considering this project and helping to brighten my students' days.”

This classroom project was brought to life by .Final Steps To India
Funded Jan 26, 2013The first month of participating in the International Leadership Program has been an incredible experience for these students. We have gotten to know the other students participating from partner schools in New York and friendships have begun to form.
The most exciting activity was our most recent rock climbing adventure. Hassaan set the tone by scurrying directly to the top of the highest climbing wall in the city, straight up the side of a four-story building. I was so proud watching all three students step out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves in various ways. From braving the dizzying heights and chilly weather, to opening up to a new group of people, these three emerged as leaders in the group.
I am so excited to watch them continue to develop their leadership skills as we prepare to leave for India in July. Thank you so much for your support in making this experience possible.”

The Other Wes Moore: Examining Choices and Fate in Literature
Funded Mar 9, 2011It has been a really exciting trimester reading The Other Wes Moore with my students. From the very first week of class, students were engaged by the basic premise of the memoir and immediately excited after watching a trailer about the novel. Students began the course by applying the themes from the book to their own lives and examining the diversions that have influenced their lives already. They drew personal time-lines and reflected on events that have brought them to where they are today. I read some very interesting and heartfelt essays, full of hopes for second chances and personal changes -- just like the author had.
Since we have started our reading of the novel, students are full of personal connections to the stories of both characters. They nod and exchange comments of recognition when Moore describes his neighborhood in the Bronx. They are captivated by the stories of "the other" Wes's journey down the wrong path. They empathize with all the characters, both Wes's, Tony, Joy and Mary. It has been wonderful to see them so excited about reading a book.
With out your generous donations this unit would not have been possible. I am so thankful that I was able to go ahead with my plans for this relevant and important course of study with my students. It has engaged them in class and reading -- two behaviors which are new to my students. It has inspired them to apply the ideas of the novel to their own lives and reflect on their personal choices. It's been a wonderful term so far -- thanks to you all! ”

Writing Their Worlds: Materials for Writer's Workshop
Funded May 1, 2009Having the support of donors like yourselves has had a huge impact on my classroom. Students are instantly motivated by technology, new materials, resources and library books because they show how invested we are in their success and their education. Particularly at the transfer high school level, our students need all the reassurance we can provide to show that they can do it -- that we believe that they are capable of completing their education.
All too often my students have heard from authority figures that they would never amount to anything. They attended over-crowded, under-resourced schools where they roamed the halls the majority of the day. At my small transfer school, we try to counteract these influences by providing students with small class sizes, up-to-date technology and engaging projects such as the Writer's Workshop model you have helped to implement. We are making monumental progress with them in this new, encouraging environment and it is all thanks to your support.”
