APS CLL. Grow. Lead. Transform. Mini-Grants The XYZprinting da Vinci Jr 3D printer will be used with my 3rd-5th grade gifted students to take their imaginative solutions to real world problems to the next level. During our second semester, the students will be focusing on the areas of engineering (3rd & 5th grades) and space exploration and forces and motion/Newton's Laws of Motion (4th grade). It is my goal to have these groups of students learn about the engineering design process and apply its components to creating concrete solutions (though in prototype form) to problems that they encounter everyday or that they see happening in the world/universe. My 3rd graders will conduct short interviews with peers, teachers, and family/community members to decide on a problem that they think needs to be solved (at school, at home, or in the community at large). Using this information, students will begin to design a prototype that they think will help make the lives of the target audience easier. Based on research from various resources, including www.nasa.gov, 4th graders will be designing pieces for Mars land rovers to further the mission of human communities on Mars. 5th graders will be designing candy/item dispensers and will use the printer to create one piece of their design.
