  • Brain Break Care Kits

    Funded Feb 17, 2021

This is so exciting for my students. They've been given the opportunity to pick their book preference, and many have said that they are excitedly waiting to receive their package in the mail. They books are avenues for my students to get brain breaks and regroup to aid in maintaining good mental and emotional health. While fun and good for reflection, the books also offer some slight brain work to help increase critical thinking and problem solving hidden in the form of fun (wink emoji).

Learning in a virtual setting poses a unique set of benefits and challenges. One major challenge is not having the students in the room to see how they are doing, read their body language and gauge facial expressions to make sure they are alright. This project allows me to send some love their way and build connections with them while also taking care of their social emotional well-being. We are so thankful!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. James

  • Meaningful Lessons

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

NTCE is one of the BEST English teacher organizations in the nation, and the resources available through them are amazing. Through the information within these quick reference guides, my lessons will be meaningful and responsive.

All students can benefit from the content of these guides and the activities within them. I look forward to the growth and success that my students will experience as a result of this project. We are more grateful than words can express for the access that these materials have afforded us.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. James

  • Student Rewards

    Funded Jan 19, 2021

My students are ecstatic about our gift card restock. They LOVE getting these rewards for their hard work. They often email me telling me when they've used their gift card and what they purchased with it (so sweet). This makes them feel valued and lets them know that they are seen. There's something very special about seeing my students excited about learning and even more special about being able to reward them for it. We're creating kids who love learning one incentive at a time through the generous and impactful DonorsChoose community.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. James

  • TCTELA Conference

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Being able to attend the TCTELA conference this year means more to me than words could express. The wealth of information provided at this conference means that my students will get the very best from me through improved practices and extended knowledge that comes from the networking and learning that take place at this conference.

I am grateful for the support that has made this possible and wait patiently (well, excitedly not patiently) for the chance to learn some new things and bring them back to my virtual classroom for student gain. You rock, DonorChoose community.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. James

  • Student Incentives

    Funded Nov 23, 2020

Student motivation is increased since we received the gift cards. Student love the prospect of being able to earn incentives for their hard work just like the rest of us. They've shown more willingness to take risks and share. Collaboration is important and they've always done well when it comes to working with others, but now they are as open to sharing out for the whole group.

I am grateful that we are able to make them feel valued and get to see that their hard work does not go unnoticed. This would not be possible without the DonorsChoose community.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. James

  • Book Diversity

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

These books will give me the opportunity to put high interest and diverse book topics into the hands of students. For some who already have a love for reading, the task is easy-- I simply find a book they'd like and give it to them. For others, it requires little more strategy and tact. With these books, I will be able to help the latter and the former. I am just so grateful that my students will get an opportunity to fall in love with reading one book at a time. I am equally grateful that I am able to get books into the hands of the students who already love reading to nurture that love in them.”

  • Virtual Learning Done Right

    Funded Sep 9, 2020

This project is special. The shift from face to face learning to online learning is new for many, familiar to some, but can pose challenges for any of us. The material in this project will help me deliver instruction to my students remotely. I will be able to create a distraction free learning environment. The kids will have a pleasant background and clear audio because of the headphones and backdrop. They will get grammar instruction from the Image Grammar book and will be able to see demonstrations of skills because of the LCD writing tablet.”

  • Interactive Visual Lessons

    Funded Sep 21, 2020

Because of this project, I have been able to create engaging lessons for my students in all three subjects/levels from general education up to senior AP English. The books gave me some great strategies to share with the AP Language and AP Literature students to help them approach analysis in a strategic and effective way. The grammar charts and MLA guide have helped my students with their writing a great deal. The LED writing tablets have come in handy when demonstrating a skill to show students. The watercolors have made note-taking more interesting and colorful, and the pencil back makes for a seamless transition from one color to the next since it houses them all in one place. This project has impacted my "in home classroom" in so many ways! I am thankful.”

  • Reading and Writing

    Funded Jul 27, 2020

Thank you for your generosity! These books have a wealth of strategies and proven practice to get my students engage in reading and writing successfully. These strategies transfer easily so that I am now able to apply them to virtual learning and can still use them when I go back into the classroom for face to face instruction post pandemic. Because of the DonorsChoose community and a match offer from Kleenex, I was able to get these resources to help reach and teach my students. For that, I am beyond thankful.”

  • Germ Busters

    Funded Jul 18, 2020

A clean classroom is so important. It has always been a priory, but has become even more of a necessity today with the introduction of the pandemic. We want to do everything we can to protect the children (within our control), and having the right supplies is a big step in doing just that. The cleanliness of our classroom will help ensure that each kid is protected and ready to learn whenever we are back together in the classroom. Your support in making this possible mean so much to me and so many other teacher like me!”

Many of my students start the year out reading below grade level. They admit to not reading and often say they do not like to read in the beginning of the school year. It is my goal to have each of them end the school year as readers, not because someone told them they had to, but because they enjoy it. Our school is a Title I school with more than 90% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged. Many of my students come to me with a sense of apathy formed from the lack of experiences of academic success in the past. We work all year to learn to grow from our failures and use them to get a step closer to success. A big part of this process is growing as readers.
