  • We're Back Together and Need Sensory Support!

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

First I want to apologize as I thought I had sent out this letter months ago!

The sensory supports you provided to my students were incredibly helpful last year. It was one of the most challenging teaching years as we adjusted to school post-closures, helped young students acclimate to in-person learning, identified therapy supports that students needed, and navigated difficult staffing shortages.

These sensory supports helped my students during dysregulation, and also served as preferred center/reward.

    Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Badsky

  • Sensory Fun for Students With Autism!

    Funded Jul 15, 2018

I can't begin to thank you enough for contributing to my project, Sensory Fun for Students with Autism. The various sensory materials have been incredibly useful in our classroom. My students often use the Kinetic Sand as a reward when they participate in positive behaviors. The orbeez (water beads) are my go-to when certain students are frustrated and in need of a "sensory break".

My students were overwhelmed with joy when I opened our sensory cabinet and they were able to see all of the materials available to them. The sensory cabinet has helped with expanding their vocabulary as they now use words such as "open" and "please" to gain access to the locked cabinet. Some students are able to take it a step further and request items by name such as "sand" or "play-dough". This is amazing progress for students who are working on their verbal abilities.

My next step is to further explore the sensory world with my students. We are exploring flexible seating with items such as rocking chairs and medicine ball chairs. We have created a "bean pool" which is a giant plastic tub filled with pinto beans - shockingly successful! The Kindergarten teachers have generously given us one of their giant water tables. We are working on including themed sensory bins, heavy work, cooking, and more practical living skills into our daily schedule.

Thank you again for your support. It means the world to myself and my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Badsky

Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, which lead to the child's ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. The resources I chose for my project will help my students with their sensory needs. The kinetic sand, snow, water beads, kinetic rock, play-dough and corresponding toys will be available to students during our sensory play time providing them with the opportunity to manipulate and mold a variety of textures. I have also included various tools such as the therapy putty and stress balls which will help students decompress during overwhelming situations. I selected a variety of fidgets (such as the tangles and fidget cube) which will help students with Autism focus while instruction is taking place. Each resource serves a specific purpose to meet students' specific sensory needs.
