Young Naturalists
Funded Oct 5, 2021Thank you so much for generously supporting my students and our future outdoor learning adventures! We are so excited to do some birding in the remaining weeks of fall migration, identify local trees and plants, and learn how to cultivate and cook with oyster mushrooms. I am confident that your support will help nurture a love for nature among my students.”

Headphones Help to Personalize Learning
Funded Sep 3, 2019Thank you so much for the headphones. For those of you who have not been in a classroom in the more recent past (3 years), you may be surprised to observe how much more personalized the individual learning experience in the classroom has become, thanks to technology. My students are especially diverse in their learning needs, reading and writing levels, and preferences for engaging with material. Technology has provided me with new ways to ensure all students have choice and access to different ways of learning science. Furthermore, the headphones ensure that I can always have prepared multiple sources for engaging with the content at different paces, and at varying levels of depth. Not only have the headphones been helpful with remediation and additional support, but they have been helpful for my most advanced learners eager to push forward in their learning.
Thank you again for your generosity and concern for ensuring that our most diverse classrooms are being supported.”

Funded Dec 3, 2019Thank you so much for your generous contribution to my classroom. As a science teacher at a Title I school, some of the largest expenses are the most basic and necessary: tissues and paper towels! We do not ask our families to contribute these materials, given their extremely limited income. I often pay for these items out of pocket, so your contributions are significant lift for me personally.”

Funded Apr 1, 2019Thank you so much for your generosity! The resources you have contributed have and will continue to reduce waste in our classroom.
Our classroom mailbox is made of durable wood, so I will be re-using this simple yet important organizing tool this coming school year. Classroom organizers enable my students to freely access classroom resources when they need it, and provide a space to submit work and retrieve feedback.
Most importantly, the lessons on sustainability learned and modeled by our classroom choices and behaviors will hopefully carry with the students for the remainder of their lives!”

Funded Nov 16, 2018In middle school science, students are introduced to some of the most important chemical processes that sustain life on Earth. Teaching the chemistry of life has been a challenge throughout my 9 years in the classroom, as it takes creativity to make these abstract molecular reactions more concrete for students. Both teaching and learning about the chemistry of life demands critical thinking and creativity for both students and teacher!
The modeling equipment that you so generously contributed to my classroom has helped make these invisible life sustaining processes more accessible and visible. By modeling these reactions within the context of our very own NYC ecosystems, my students were able to both better understand the cycling of matter and energy in our city, while becoming more aware of the invisible impact of humans on Earth's ecosystems. This has laid powerful groundwork for our next few projects focused on health and environmental injustice.
We transformed our classroom into a museum exhibit called "Invisible Worlds" and invited members of the school community to come learn from my students' models and commentaries. We had over 100 visitors! The project was so popular that 3 other science teachers in the building are currently implementing the same project!
Thank you so much for your generous contribution. I hope that your gift validates the need to support and advocate for our public schools. Amazing learning is happening everyday in our classrooms which unfortunately doesn't get much acknowledgement.”

Funded Feb 26, 2016Thank you so much for the snacks!
We have been enjoying them during our weekly Coffeehouse, which is when we join with Ms. Shon's other classes to discuss and debate things we are learning in class, such as global warming and Dystopian novels. During Coffeehouse, we dim the lights in the classroom and eat snacks. This helps put everyone in a better mood and more willing to share!
We also enjoy the snacks you generously shared after school when we stay with Ms. Shon for extra help. The snacks help us to stay energized and focused.
Thank you so much for your generosity.”

Funded Oct 19, 2015We are so incredibly grateful and thrilled for our students to have access to one-on-one tutoring via Mentored. Computers, software, and passionate teachers have continuously improved learning at MS 88. But personalized mentorship for our students in conjunction with all of these great things is beyond any opportunities we have ever sought or been offered. Mentored will undoubtedly advance student learning, while supporting and pushing the student-centered, "self-directed learning" culture we are working day and night to create.
Once again, thank you for your generosity and concern for helping all learners succeed.”

Transforming Science Learning by Transcending Translation
Funded Jan 18, 2011Thank you so much for the overhead projector! I have not gone one day without using it since the day it arrived. Because of your contribution, my students are able to watch science videos, use interactive science websites (with our touch-screen "smart" board), and learn from multiple forms of literacy via Prezi and Powerpoint. This projected has really boosted my students' learning, which has been manifested as increased engagement, class participation, and assessment scores. Again, thank you thank you thank you!”

Headphones to Support Our Thriving Multimodal Learning!
Funded Oct 26, 2013Thank you so much for the class set of headphones! Because of your generous contribution, my students have been able to watch amazing HD science videos, use cutting-edge interactive science websites, and most importantly, engage in multimodal learning at an individualized pace. If you are interested in checking out how we are making use of our headphones in collaboration with our other classroom resources, check out our class website: www.shonscience.com. The project has especially boosted learning among my ESL and special needs students. This growth is evident by increased class participation, increased homework completion rates, and most importantly, increased confidence in class discussion! Thank you thank you thank you!”

Googling and Goggling!
Funded Feb 7, 2013This is just a small token of my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. The printer that you donated has helped my students every single day! We've used it to extract information for research projects, print image-based vocabulary flash cards, diagrams, models, poems, essays, and current events in science. The printer has been used by all of my students, including English Language Learners, students with special needs, and gifted students.
Without your help, my students would never have had this vital resource. For beginning language students in middle school, acquiring scientific knowledge and skills through the aid of multiple forms of text is critical to continued academic success.
We have made sure to set specific guidelines for usage of the printer to maintain our environmentally conscious and sustainability focused classroom. Thank you again for your contribution to my classroom and our community.”
