My self-contained, sixth grade classroom has 50 students and 2 teachers who are all learning together. My students come from low income backgrounds and broken homes. Many of my student have parents who are working 2-3 jobs, have fathers in jail/prison, or their grandparents have custody of them. My students are excited and motivated to learn, but do not have the background knowledge necessary to help them make sense of difficult math problems. Hands-on materials will help my students relate to the concepts included in the new common core standards.
