Allowing student choice in the classroom is a huge motivator. I would love to provide my students with a comfortable, personalized learning environment that allows for flexible seating options. Students would be free to choose seats based on their needs and learning styles opposed to sitting in traditional chairs all day.
The focus of my project is my students - specifically student motivation, engagement, and independence. I hope to add flexible seating options, such as wobble chairs, floor chairs and seat cushions which can allow students a variety of choices for independent work time. When given choices, students take ownership of their learning. Studies show that this increases motivation and engagement. In my classroom, students are given choices in learning each day. For example, they select books to read, stories to write, games to play at work stations, and even partners to work with. Providing a variety of seating options supports the fact that the classroom is full of a variety of learners. Students will learn to make self-selected seating choices that help them learn the best.
Flexible seating also allows for movement within the room. In turn, this helps students use the extra energy that often builds up during the day. When students are able to recognize and decide how to properly use that energy, they become more focused. Choice allows students to learn to take responsibility and make wise decisions, which can affect their learning in the classroom. For example, students quickly learn who makes a good learning partner or which area of the room allows them to concentrate and focus on their work. These skills lay a foundation for making wise choices outside of the classroom. I'm so excited, and grateful, to be able to share this opportunity with the children in my classroom.
