  • STEM Bins for Meaningful Work

    Funded Jul 27, 2023

This project has improved my classroom because it gives my students a creative and purposeful outlet to create. So much of their day is filled with rigorous tasks. Students really look forward to getting their hands in the bins to explore and engineer through play.

They are absolutely loving their STEM Bins! For the first 20 minutes each morning a team of 6 students gets to build a structure of their choice. The teams change every week. The Legos, Play Doh, and Bristle Blocks are their favorite material to work with right now. Monday is 'Maker Monday' where students are free to invent without a task card. Tuesday is 'Task Card Tuesday' where students to use the task cards to create as many structures as they can in 20 minutes. Wednesday is 'Writing Wednesday' where they use quick writes. Thursday is 'Thinking Thursday' where I present them with a specific challenge. Friday is 'Friend Friday' where they engineer with a partner or small group.

Thank you for making STEM Bins Center possible in my classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Sterling

Many of my students come from low-income, working-class families. We live in a city riddled with gang-violence. My students are at high-risk in many areas and do not have much access to the English language when they are at home. In addition some of the parents of my students work in agriculture. With all that said, my students are not only resilient, they are unique individuals who deserve a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help my kids meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them.
