One area my students struggle with is developing a passion for reading. In an age of technology and being a 1 to 1 school, developing literacy is a goal we strive to implement. This semester we will cover a unit that deals with Government Systems and Global Conflict. This unit is difficult for students to grasp just by learning the causes and effects of conflict. Exposing students to memoirs from students their age will have a lasting impact on how they perceive other cultures and the conflicts they face. Students will read and create a presentation depicting how students around the world deal with conflict and the changing climate of their government. Students will rank their top choices and be placed in a cohort with students who picked the same book. Students will read this book throughout our conflict unit completing tasks based on our objectives for the unit. Students in each cohort will create a presentation demonstrating how their book reflects the involvement or lack thereof of governments when conflicts arise. This project will not only meet our school's goal of literacy in the classroom, but will connect students from all walks of life to understand each other better and start a dialogue of how they can make a difference in their own communities.
