A Little of This and Some of That
Funded Dec 3, 2024Thank you so much for donating to my project, " A Little of This and Some of That." With your donations, electronic timers, mortar and pestle units, measuring tapes, markers, protractors, toothpicks, and snack candy were purchased.
I have as many as 34 students in the class. When running groups or activities, it is ideal to have no more than three or four kids per group. The additional supplies will make class and activities run a bit smoother.
Just this week we made banners for marine science class. The Sharpies came in perfect timing. My students LOVED that we had NEW markers. It's the little things! We also enjoyed the snack candy. Students are motivated by a little mint! I have attached pictures of passing out the snack candy, teaching the students how to use the protractor (they had to relearn it!), and using the mortar and pestle units.
Again, thank you. DonorsChoose has been such a blessing to my classroom, my students, and to me. I cannot imagine teaching without the generosity of this platform and donors who are willing to help my student students succeed”

Funded Nov 13, 2024Thank you so much for funding our project to camouflage cookies. In our marine science class, we have been studying how the organisms of the ocean accomplish this. We are especially mesmerized by the cuttlefish and the octopus, which can quickly change skin color and texture.
As a fun learning activity on the week before we get out for Christmas break, students brought in a piece of Christmas paper, not knowing what they were going to do with it. I provided cookies and plates but you provided everything else. You purchased the icing, the spoons, knives, food coloring, and toothpicks for my students to decorate their cookies so that they blend in with the paper. It's time-consuming, but it's also fun. We listen to Christmas music as we try to accomplish the goal. I have included six of the more successfully decorated cookies in the pictures for your slideshow enjoyment.
We have already broken into the snacks, despite wanting to use them for exam time review! My students were quite lethargic one day, so I had to rely on the snacks to boost my students. YAY! We appreciate the snacks a LOT!
On behalf of my students, thank you very much for your generosity in providing all of these materials. DonorsChoose has really made a difference in my classroom. I will forever be grateful.”

Funded Nov 13, 2024THANK you for funding this wonderful project. My Earth and Environmental students study soil and the fact that termites are all around us is so interesting. This activity shows that termites indeed leave a trail of pheromones and that is how they know to get back to their nest, or where to find food, or to follow one of their own. But BIC inks have a chemical in them that mimics that exact pheromone and my students love to draw trails to see them get on track. We have found that many inks will work, but the BIC ink is the most successful for tracking them.
We also enjoyed the snacks and candy as well.
As always, you are the best and we certainly appreciate you!”

Funded Oct 24, 2024All dissections in Science class are exciting and a great learning opportunity. I love that my students are so engaged in this absolutely fun activity.
Thank you for providing these seastar specimens and this seastar dissection lab for my Marine Science students.
Students worked in teams of two. We began with a good discussion of how sea stars are classed, their specific phylum, and how they fit into our world. We talked about what they eat, and what eats them. We included how they fit into the ocean benthos. We discussed their regenerative ability and their symmetry. Then the fun part! Step one was investigating the external parts of the organism. Highlights of the external parts included noting both an aboral side and an oral side. On the aboral side, there is a major sieve plate called the maderporite. This is where the water enters the organism.
Step two was the internal parts of the anatomy. It's interesting because there are lots of digestive parts and reproductive ones. The kids are always so grossed out by the digestive glands or the pyloric stomach.
Thank you for supporting my classroom, my students, and me. DonorsChoose has made such a major impact on my teaching. I just love it.”

Color My Mental Health
Funded Aug 14, 2024Thank you so much for providing a plethora of great resources to help my students deal with their social emotional health. I ordered some very interesting books for my students to check out or to even keep if they need to. There were also some coloring books in my project which is a relaxing activity for teenagers who are stressed. The coloring books were filled with motivational messages or affirmations to stay mentally healthy. The stickers were a big hit. Students chose stickers to put on their water bottles, lockers, notebooks. and their Chromebooks.
As you could tell by the pictures, we had a great time in class after a test to just take some time to chat among ourselves and color. One of the coloring books had a QR code in it where you could download the same coloring sheets, so that's what I did for the class time activity. That allowed me to give the students their own coloring book. Students were very much appreciative and enjoyed this activity. They asked if we could do this more often.
Needless to say, this activity, and those to come, would not have been possible without DonorsChoose and the Gates Foundation! Thank you so much for always thinking about students in our public schools.”

Funded Aug 14, 2024THANK YOU! As a teacher, we have so many things to think about as we go about the task of educating our students. Testing anxiety is one of them and I must admit, I don't take this as seriously as I should. BUT, DonorsChoose to the rescue! These resources will hopefully help my students!
Have you ever reviewed for a test, then colored a cool graphic, as a mental time-out right before the test? No? ME either!! So, I tried this the other day, and the kids loved it. They were chatty with one another and calmed themselves as they took a quick mental break in their day. Then, we took the test, and post-test, I shared mints with them. I reversed the tension of test day!
Thank you so much for your help!”

Funded Aug 27, 2024Woo hoo! Thank you for helping to fund "Quizlet and Snacks". This was a project that brought an updated improved gaming review platform to our classroom and snacks for the students.
As you know, reviewing information and prepping for a test can be tiresome and very boring. But with gaming platforms, sometimes students don't even know they are reviewing. The beauty of having a subscription means that you have no ads and special features not offered on the free program or app.
Of course, Little Debbie snack cakes are always a hit. With this project, I received quite a few snack items along with a great variety as well. As you can tell in the pictures, I just placed some of them in a large blue bowl and offered the snacks to the students. A couple of the boys offered a very robust thumbs up, which I'm sure you've seen in the pictures too.
Again, thank you for supporting my project and for supporting my students. I can not imagine teaching without the support of my friends, my family, my students and their families through DonorsChoose.”

Hats Off to Ocean Explorers and Scientists
Funded Aug 14, 2024Thank you so much for your wonderful donations that funded this project, "Hats off to Ocean Explorers and Scientists." Now my students and I can say, "Hats off to you!"
The hat is part of a creative component on a project on Ocean Explorers. My students really enjoy coming up with creative ideas that will represent their chosen research topic. Some students work in class while others take the hat home. Some spray paint it, some add models. Some are embellished with glitter but all are different and unique. I think you'll enjoy seeing the pictures of my students working on wearing or displaying their hats.
Again, thank you,”

Funded Aug 15, 2024Comfortable chairs that can be adjusted in height from a desk area to a lab area, have an area for storing materials in the back, and that spin? Yes, Please! My students LOVE these chairs. These stools are perfect. Teenagers like flexible seating and learning in a comfortable place. They often RUN to claim these seats. I absolutely cannot have but so many desks in a classroom as well as stools and label tables. Having nicer chairs was my solution to limit the desks since they take up so much valuable space.
Through DonorsChoose, my students now enjoy a stool in every dedicated lab space. Thank you so much.”

Funded Aug 14, 2024Nicole, you rock! So does the Gates Foundation! Thank you so much for funding to digital platforms that we use for review and gaming in my classroom. It is so nice to have the updated versions of these apps because now they are delivered to us ad- free. I also now can enjoy other upgrades, like adding images to questions and a more detailed results report to name two. I just love DonorsChoose and I cannot imagine teaching without it. It is vital that our students get quality resources and that I as their teacher have an opportunity to provide that for them.”
