When I taught using a traditional instructional model (lecturing most of the class, grading for completion, and forcing all students along a standardized pace), I knew there must be a better way. To incorporate best teaching practices, I needed a way to multiply myself to help students who were absent, needed help, or were ready to go deeper. Students wanted to be in charge of their learning and have more opportunities to collaborate, and I knew they needed help with executive functioning. Last year, I researched student-centered teaching models, primarily through Modern Classrooms Project resources, to find a way to better meet diverse student needs, create more equitable opportunities for learning, and put students in the driver’s seat. This year, pending technology availability, I am committed to shifting to a modern, student-centered model, aspiring to use 3 main structures below. -Equity through blended instruction -Personalization through self-pacing -Mastery-based learning Blended Instruction: There is no lecturing in my class. Students access course content through Google Classroom where they take notes while watching my short instructional videos with embedded questions and navigate through the course without my assistance. This requires headphones! Physical activities associated with the lessons are available in the classroom. This gives me the freedom to spend class time working with students.
