  • Creating Excitement for Historical Fiction!

    Funded Oct 18, 2017

Thank you for donating to my project "Creating Excitement for Historical Fiction!" I explained to my students how we were very lucky to have generous donors as partners to help them achieve their reading goals and understand important events in our world. My 5th and 6th grade students were very excited to receive the books sets!

As an English language arts teacher, my school library has limited funding to purchase historical books sets that correlate to our socials studies standards. The books helped my students to understand the different perspectives of people that were involved in an important time in our history.

Funding for reading materials is very difficult to obtain and you were able to provide me and my students a much needed resource. Your partnership with DonorsChoose.org has made the difference in my ability to help my students prepare for their future!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Strachan

This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose.org Community and one other donor.
  • Help Create Excitement for Informational Text!

    Funded Aug 25, 2016

Thank you for donating to my project "Help Create Excitement for Informational Text!" I explained to my students how we were very lucky to have generous donors as partners to help them achieve their reading goals. My students were very excited to receive Scholastic News and Time for Kids magazines every week. Their eyes lit up and were eager for me to hand out the magazines as soon as they would arrive!

As an English language arts teacher, my school library has limited funding to purchase books and has very outdated or uninteresting non-fiction resources to support the reading development of my students. In addition, my students are a generation of gamers and Netflix watchers, and did not find reading enjoyable. With the arrival of the new magazines, my students were learning about current events from around the world that inspired further research and thought provoking academic conversations among each other. This new "voice" has resulted in a dramatic improvement in their explanatory and opinion writing.

  • GAP Students Need Keyboards!

    Funded Oct 5, 2016

Thank you for donating to my project "GAP Students Need Keyboards!" My students were very excited to unpack the mystery gift that was delivered to our classroom. Their eyes lit up and joyous screams filled the room when they discovered that we had new Belkin keyboards to use with their iPads. I explained how we were lucky to have Chevron as a partner to help them achieve their educational goals.

The iPad's keyboard screen can be difficult for children to use at a desk or table. When it is laying on a flat surface, the student has to awkwardly lean over the device to see what is being typed. Students prefer to use the iPad case to incline the device, but their wrists hurt because they are placed in an uncomfortable position for typing. The net result was 2-finger typing and slow keyboarding speed. With the arrival of the Belkin keyboards, my students have the ability to see and type in the most optimal position which has dramatically improved their keyboarding skills.

Funding for technology is very difficult to obtain and you were able to provide the equipment that we needed in order for my students to become proficient with their keyboarding skills. Your partnership with DonorsChoose.org has made the difference in my ability to help my students prepare for their future!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Strachan

I teach in a Title I school that is located in a rural community that serves the educational needs of over 650 students in grades K-6. I work with multi-grade level ELA students who love to read fictional books. However, they shy away from non-fiction reading because they find the text structure difficult to understand. Having access to current high interest non-fiction magazines will help develop my students to be well rounded readers.
