  • Bronx Students Want to See "He Named Me Malala"

    Funded Sep 8, 2015

    Dear Donors:

The 7th grade students and teachers enjoyed this experience immensely. The story of Malala was both educational and intriguing. The students were engaged in the lessons leading up to the trip to the movie theater. The 7th grade Social Studies, English Language Arts, and Global Connection, and Mathematics teachers all incorporated discussions about the geographic region, religion, and the political context of Malala's story.

This is an experience all will remember with fondness.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harris

  • Making Math Make Sense with Dollars and Cents

    Funded May 7, 2011

Again, I want to extend a sincere thank you for your donation. My co-teacher, Mr. Acevedo, thanks you as well. Your generous gift gave us the opportunity to provide our students with financial literacy education that often is not touched upon at all in the normal curriculum. We were able to teach lessons and assign activities that the students will be able to apply in their daily lives.

This year, my co-teacher and I taught proportions and percents. We were able to extend that knowledge into lessons on taxes, tips, and interest. We had the students create stores. They were able to decide what types of products their stores would specialize in, the prices, discounts, and tax. The students were very creative in their choices. There was everything from a spy store to a summer store. They were engaged from the beginning of the 3 week project until their presentation of their experience.

Thank you again for providing my students a unique and important experience.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harris

  • Future Financial Freedom for Bronx Students

    Funded Jan 23, 2009

I would like to express my sincerest thanks for your generous donation. The note from you shows that you fully understand the importance of financial literacy education for the youth. I know that the lessons they will learn will be useful for each and every one of them.

I plan to create a financial literacy unit to be implemented in May 2009. The unit will consist of at least twenty lessons. The students will learn about personal money management topics. The topics will include, but are not limited to budgeting, checking and savings accounts, and investments. The students will emerge from this unit with a portfolio of valuable money management skills to keep and refer to as needed.

Your gift will help me to create this financial literacy unit for my current and future students. My students may share the information with their family and friends. Your gift may also inspire other teachers to create their own financial literacy program.

Thank you again for your kindness, generosity, and commitment to self-improvement through education.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harris

  • Investing In The Future of Students

    Funded Feb 11, 2009

I am unable to thank you enough for your generosity. I have allowed my students to preview the books and materials. I did not have to do much to motivate them about the upcoming financial literacy unit. They are excited to learn about how to be smart with money.

I will begin the 20 lesson unit in May. The students will learn about money matters dealing with but not limited to, assets, liabilities, credit, interest, checking accounts, and savings accounts. We will play a daily game I have created called, "My Mind on My Money." In this game they will be given a monthly income and have to budget rent or mortgage, food, utilities, etc. They will keep a daily journal or log of their money transactions and the information will be used as part of their end of the year assessment My students are even giving me ideas on how to fine-tune this project.

My students are now our students. Thank you again for your caring about their futures. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Harris

I chose to teach in the Bronx because this is where I grew up. I understand how itmportant it is for inner city students to have quality teachers who care. I currently teach sixth grade seventh grade Mathematics in an Integrated Co-Teaching classroom model. Some of my students receive special needs services, such as counseling, speech therapy, and resource room. They each have varying strengths and weaknesses. However, they are equal in their desire to achieve the most out of life.
