Reviving Creativity: Bringing Art Back to Schools
Funded Dec 16, 2021Since receiving our materials, our students have designed a space that was once underutilized. Previously, the room, which is located in the school lobby, served as merely a storage area. Using their creativity and artistic skills that they honed in both Studio Art and AP Art History class, students created a gallery whose vast windows open out on to the street, thus inviting the community to engage.
When students first saw the materials they were both stunned and ecstatic; lighting, benches, end table, and decorative pillows and throws were hand-selected by the students who did not initially expect to have their wish list fulfilled. Upon arrival, the students dove into the project of designing a room that is aligned with the aesthetics of galleries and museums in New York City--all places that they have visited as part of the AP Art History curriculum.
The next step for the space is to host a gallery show for the school's annual Night of the Arts, organized by our Studio Art teacher. In collaboration with students who are both in the Interior Design Club and AP Art History, an inaugural exhibition, showcasing the work of parents, staff, alumni, and students will be unveiled. This exhibition will be curated by the students of the Interior Design Club and will be followed by a reception for both parents, staff, and students.
The hope is that the gallery will serve as space where students can continue to showcase their work.”
With gratitude,
