The Ram Squad has existed for the past 2 years at Dickinson High School in Jersey City New Jersey. The group consists of 25 energetic and dedicated students who needed a positive creative outlet. We are an inner city multi ethnic school that has not embraced the ambiance of attending a diverse school. Often the school is on high alert because of the different ethnicities fighting one another instead of embracing the difference and challenging themselves to find the similarities. These students are faced with a world that is corrupted by violence and the dance group was created to encourage solidarity and teamwork. Most of these students have never been a part of a team or worked with people outside of their race. At first it was a challenge to get the students to work as a team and become a cohesive unit. Now the team had survived and flourished for two years but the school is unable to financially fund the group with uniforms that represent our progress as a team. The parents are also unable to help with funding because more times than not they are struggling to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table and needed clothes on their backs. The team as proven to be a great asset to our school by performing at school functions like, pep rallies, after school activities, faculty meetings and new to our roster basketball games. The team has grown in size and determination and the only aspect we are lacking is looking the part of a team. We are often faced with trying to get clothes that the students already have that are similar to help them look as a unified team.
