Reading Readiness Materials for Preschool English Language Learners

Funded Dec 18, 2018

Your donation is extremely useful in my classroom as my students develop the foundational skills they need to be successful in kindergarten. The letter/sounds tubs in English and Spanish are a must have resource for a bilingual preschool classroom. I use them to teach literacy skills like rhyming, letter recognition, and sound identification. Even my special needs student has been able to benefit from this resource by being motivated to participate in learning and developing his vocabulary.

One of the ways I use this resource is with an activity called Rhyming Basket. To prepare this activity, I select items that rhyme such as bat/cat and manzana/ventana. I introduce all items to my students to make sure they have the correct vocabulary and review the concept of rhyming by identifying words that rhyme with their own names, such as Trevor/clever. Then I allow them to take turns selecting two items from the basket that rhyme. If they do rhyme, they get to play with the items for a little while. If not, they get to observe their classmates and try again when it is their turn. This activity really motivates students to work on the difficult concept of rhyming!”

With gratitude,
