Have you ever sat in a hard chair all day? After my experiences over the last 12 years of teaching, and after being the mom of a child with high energy, I have realized that each student is smart, but needs different things to realize their highest level of success. I have decided that I want to open up the seating choices for my students in my classroom. Rather than rows of desks, I want to give my students the comfort to choose a style of learning that fits their needs.
By helping my students to feel comfortable and relaxed, I can reach the students that are often lost in a row of desks with uncomfortable seats. When my students are seated in a way that is comfortable for them and their needs, they are more motivated to participate and excited to be at school. I have noticed that when my students are allowed to sit on the floor or in my reading corner with bean bags, they are more focused and involved in class discussions. They make good choices about who to sit with and where to work, and they are generally less disruptive and more engaged.
Although I let students get up and move around in centers, this will allow students to be comfortable all day, even when I am whole-group teaching. Some desks and chairs already in my classroom will still be available for students that want them. I also have a table and a few pillows for the students, but with class sizes between 20-24 children, I simply need some help to provide all students with equal opportunity! With your help, we can provide cushions, sensory seats, chairs of several kinds, and rugs for all of my students to feel ready to learn!
