We are requesting these funds for middle school students to have a “makerspace” environment allowing full creativity and making to take place throughout the disciplines. Makerspaces are defined as: a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. “A makerspace can be anything from a repurposed book cart filled with arts and crafts supplies to a table in a corner set out with LEGOs to a full blown fab lab with 3D printers, laser cutters, and hand tools. Makers are artists, crafters, knitters, seamstresses, builders, programmers, engineers, hackers, painters, woodworkers, tinkerers, inventors, bakers, graphic designers and more.”
Research has shown that when students are able to create and explore learning unfolds and engagement increases. “Makerspaces are collaborative learning environments where people come together to share materials and learn new skills… “ Library as incubator project. This will allows us to encourage hands on, innovative learning. The environment would encourage students to be creative, innovative, critical thinkers and so much more, the sky is the limit.
The supplies we are requesting will be used to make our maker space dream a reality. One section of the room will be for recording videos with iPads and green screens. Another section for creating projects with their hands, students will use paper, foam board, tape, modeling clay, paint, and more. The last part will be for virtual reality, where students will use the Google VR goggles for this. Lastly, students will have an opportunity to use problem solving skills with the "Breakout EDU Kit." The possibilities are endless with these supplies.
This room would continue to grow each year. Our hope is to continually add materials and products throughout the year.
