Funded Oct 17, 2023Your generosity has allowed students to have snacks during our monthly book club meetings. Because the students are at school approximately 9 hours on these days, a nutritional snack prevents them from getting hungry. As a result, they are able to read, comprehend, analyze, and discuss pertinent parts of the book with peers.
These students reading skills have improved. They're now able to speak about story elements and how they contribute to the plot of text. Their interest in informational text has also increased.
We're extremely grateful that you understood the impact of this project and ensured that it was fully funded. Thank you!!!”

Funded Dec 8, 2022It is with sincere gratitude and appreciation that I submit this letter of impact to you for your generosity given to our "My Family and Me Project." This project has allowed our scholars to enjoy our newly founded after school book club. The students are able to read simultaneously and analyze text in order to determine what the text says explicitly while making logical inferences. These materials encourage students to cite evidence when responding orally, and they provide opportunities for students to respond to the text through writing.
The after school book club has been an absolute success!! During the month of February, our text centered around Black History Month. Henry's Freedom Box, Pies from Nowhere, and Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre were some of the books we read. Separate is Never Equal by Sylvia Mendes was one of the books we read. To bring the story to life, we invited Hezekiah Watkins, one of the youngest Freedom Riders. While attempting to desegrate the bus station in Jackson, MS, Mr. Watkins was arrested. The children were shocked to find out that he was sent to Parchman Penitentiary and placed on Death Row at the age of 13. These texts gave the students a glimpse into how dangerous the civil rights movement was for those fighting for equality.
Because the students have their own books, parents have joined in by reading the text and sharing their experiences. Students and parents have make connections to the texts, which have prompted them to interview family members, neighbors, and other citizens about their experiences during this era.
The primary goal of this project was to increase literacy using books that would spark thought provoking discussions. Your donations have made this possible and we're forever grateful!”

Funded Dec 30, 2010Your donations have impacted student learning tremendously. The students are able to arrange ideas prior to drafting because of the Student Writing Notebooks. The Writing Process Chart provides a visual aid to the composing process which makes the students aware of their next steps. In the past, being able to revise and edit drafts had been a challenge for my students. Because of the editing checklist that's located inside of the students' writing notebooks, the students are now able to edit their writing effectively. The Subject Area Writing Prompts reinforces skills taught across disciplines. They assess students' knowledge of concepts because they require the students to use application to respond to a variety of subject area writing prompts. Students now understand that writing is a process that leads to a great product. These materials will continue to assist students in writing for different purposes and audiences.
Thank you for your support. You have made a difference in the lives of children who thrive daily for excellence.”
