My students face many challenges in their daily lives. Just making it to school at all is oftentimes a huge struggle in itself. They come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Some are homeless and bounce around between homeless shelters and cars. Others live in the housing projects or commute a distance to get to school. All my students are students of color. The screen time my students have is usually spent watching Netflix or playing video games. My students are slowly becoming more inspired to take control of their education and take advantage of opportunities to learn all they can. We recently spent 2 nights on an outdoor education field trip and my students came back wanting to watch science and nature shows instead of cartoons! And after having a class discussion on how we could get our low reading scores up my class agreed they needed to practice. We started book clubs, students made commitments to read for 30 minutes a day and practice reading fluency and comprehension skills. I signed up for a teacher edition of Freckle, an educational app to support learning in the classroom. My students have been more and more inspired to practice reading and comprehension to earn Freckle coins. Unfortunately we don't always have access to technology because our school shares throughout the grades. I would like to help support my students in their learning by using fun and engaging resources to reenforce what they are learning in the classroom. With the use of a classroom iPad, students will be able to rent books from the library and have them immediately downloaded to the iPad. They will also have access to educational apps like ST Math and Freckle so not only are they able to practice but are enjoying learning too.
