I teach in a very low income area. Our local police department is very active in our school community, and according to our GRIP officer (Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership), there are 35 identified rival gangs in our neighborhood. The students we serve are extremely high risk, as this is the norm in their community and often in their own homes. Despite that, my class is one of the brightest and hardest working groups of students I have ever worked with. They are proud to be referred to as scholars, and they work very hard to achieve their personal best each day. They crave opportunity and thrive during those times they can show their creativity. They deserve an equal opportunity to succeed, and the generosity of the donors here provide them with the chance of a better future.
