Sensory corner would be an amazing and powerful area in my classroom especially when students are unable to self-regulate their behaviors. Meltdowns are typical in an autism classroom, but can be decreased when there are tools and resources to support the student.
Sensory corner has a lot of benefits such as providing a sense of comfort, safety, and calmness when my students feel overwhelmed by the classroom demands and tasks, access to appropriate sensory tools, can improve learning and focus, and enhance cognitive, visual, auditory, fine and gross motor skills, and many more.
All of the students in my classroom can greatly benefit with the sensory corner and tools it can offer essential for sensory integration. When a student is unable to cope with the classroom demands due to an overwhelming sensory stimulation, a break is necessary and that can be going to a sensory corner. The sensory corner can serve as a calming space for my students by maximizing the tools such as beanbag chairs, headphones, kinetic sand, sensory mats, fluorescent light filters, sensory pillow, and weighted blanket. The sensory corner also needs partitions and dividers to provide a well-defined space and minimize distractions for my students.
Providing the sensory tools necessary for my students' learning outcomes will create a lifelong impact to the families and the community. My students will be able to self-regulate when given appropriate tools and techniques to cope with a challenging situation. Your support and kindness can definitely make a positive ripple in the lives of students with unique and special needs.
