The Spanish 2 pre-test year showed some deficits in reading comprehension in Spanish. Many of my students were only emergent learners on the Spanish one Final Exam, the Spanish 2 pre-test. Our school was remote last year, like so many others, due to COVID. So, our students did not receive the extra support that is so often needed when they are learning any language for the first time. The Scholastic Magazines are an answer to helping my students build not only their reading comprehension skills but also their confidence and interest in learning Spanish. EACH student will receive six magazine issues throughout the year. How cool is that??? Each magazine contains up-to-date and relevant news and cool high-interest articles for teens. Students will also receive digital access and comprehension activities that will strengthen their critical thinking skills. One day/week is dedicated to reading literacy. Students will read their magazine, any article that they choose, and complete the accompanying activities-digitally or in the magazine itself. It's their choice and that is what reading for pleasure is all about...choosing what one wishes to read. The culminating activity will be to discuss with their partner and as a class what they learned. After a year and half of remote learning, putting something tangible in the hands of my students that will help them improve their proficiency levels all around is awesome. We began the year with a lesson on proficiency levels and my students set a goal to move at lease one proficiency by December. This magazine subscription will give them another tool in their toolbox to do so.
