We gather at the carpet for whole group mini lessons and for differentiated learning stations. First graders struggle with appropriate spatial awareness for one another. A lot of instructional time is lost due to having to assist students in where to sit, and in spacing them appropriately from one another. Having a larger carpet with colored spots will allow my students to have their very own go-to spot for learning. Our current classroom carpet is a distraction for my students because it is unraveling along the edges. It is dark green and very thin making it not very welcoming and comfortable for my students to sit on.
